Is Zayn Malik going to get the crucial career help he needs for his anxiety issue from Adele and her crystal therapy or is his road to recovery more akin to Susan Boyle’s experiences?
Zayn Malik has been a topic in mental health news because of an anxiety attack that he had before a concert that forced him to cancel his appearance. About the incident, Guardian quotes Zayn Malik talking about how the issues he has with anxiety have been “haunting” him for the past few months when he deals with performances.
In fact, Zayn Malik was quoted stating the following about his negative feelings toward performing around the time he quit One Direction in 2015.
“[B]y the time I decided to go, it just felt right on that day. I woke up on that morning […] and was like, ‘I need to go home. I just need to be me now, because I’ve had enough.”
Following the cancellation of the June 11 concert at the Capital FM Summertime Ball, Zayn Malik said he could “not apologize enough” to disappointed fans, and seemed determined to get some help.
A week later, Mirror reported on June 18 that Zayn Malik is seeking out other celebrity singers for advice, and he is starting with Adele. One of the reasons Zayn Malik might be asking Adele specifically is due to the fact she overcame her fear of performing in front of a festival audience.
Regardless, there is one singer that Zayn Malik should also look up that has a great deal of experience in dealing with performance anxiety: Susan Boyle.
After Susan Boyle suffered an anxiety attack incident in early April in a U.K. airport, the world was reminded that, like Zayn Malik, Boyle has had to overcome anxiety related to fame and performance.
About a month after Susan Boyle had a “meltdown” from anxiety in early April, insiders were quoted by UnReality TV talking about how her tour schedule needed to be curbed in order to support Susan Boyle’s anxiety issues.
In other words, while Susan Boyle loves performing and being a singer, it was speculated that “Susan’s future tours could be watered down somewhat in order to prevent Susan from having to do too much [anxiety-triggering] heavy traveling.”
On the other hand, asking Adele could be an interesting choice for advice in Zayn Malik’s situation because she found the best therapy for performance anxiety was by using crystals. While Adele was reluctant about the idea of using crystals as a solution for anxiety, the proof, for her, was in the pudding.
The Sun quotes Adele talking about crystal therapy around March 20 with the following.
“I was so nervous about my comeback show and I was panicking. I was out of practice and I was busy being a Mum… But it was one of the best shows I’ve ever done and I had these bloody crystals in my hand.”
Adele says the effect was so noticeable that accidentally losing the crystals negatively affected her Grammy’s performance. Despite not having the inclination to meditate or use crystals in her past, overcoming performance anxiety to such a large degree converted Adele into a self-described “hippy.”
Time will tell if Zayn Malik starts holding onto crystals during his performances, but he is hardly alone in suffering from this type of anxiety. For instance, Huffington Post points out that in addition to Zayn Malik, Susan Boyle and Adele, other celebrity singers with “stage fright” are Barbra Streisand and Fiona Apple.
Otherwise, Zayn Malik will likely have the basic framework for dealing with anxiety, according to the Anxiety and Depression Society of America. A list of solutions are presented on their website, and one of the keys for coping with the type of anxiety Zayn Malik has is to have a supportive environment of friends or family.
Thankfully, in addition to being close to his family, Zayn Malik also has the open support of his girlfriend, Gigi Hadid, according to Irish Mirror.
