At the time this match took place, CM Punk had been champion for over a year. WWE really wanted John Cena and the Rock to headline WrestleMania again that year, however, and so the plan was made to put the title on the Rock.

Punk and Rock put on a stellar match at the Rumble in 2013. It received 4 stars from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. In terms of fan acclaim, it falls short of some of the other matches on this list but its importance in WWE history is notable.

Seth Rollins Vs. John Cena Vs. Brock Lesnar - Royal Rumble 2015

Few matches in John Cena's career are more widely praised than the triple threat he had against Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins at the Royal Rumble in 2015.

John Cena Vs. Umaga - Royal Rumble 2007

In 2007, John Cena took on Umaga in a Last Man Standing match.

Voters on Cagematch have ranked this the best match of Umaga's career. It received 4 stars from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter and stands as the 13th best match in Cena's career according to fan votes.

For Umaga, this was an important match. He was a dominant heel that was being put up against the champion on the road to WrestleMania. That the match was as highly regarded as it was is a credit to him as a performer. Sadly, Umaga would pass away less than 3 years later.

The Rock Vs. Mankind - Royal Rumble 1999

This was hard to watch, but a very important match. WWE was now winning the Monday Night Wars but the battle was not over yet. WCW hadn't completely fallen apart by this time, though things were on shaky ground.

During this match, Rock hit Mick Foley with a series of unprotected chair shots. Footage of Foley's children having to leave the venue in tears was included in the "Beyond the Mat" documentary and Foley himself noted that perhaps it was time for him to do something else after.

A match like this would never happen again. Not with all we know about concussions and head injuries. It's not for the squeamish but it was a big match at an important time in wrestling.

Cactus Jack's street fight against Triple H for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble is one of, if not the most, highly-praised match of Mick Foley's career. According to votes on Cagematch, it is the most highly praised. Voters also rank it as the 2nd best match of Triple H's career. Considering how many important matches those two have had, that this gets ranked as highly as it does is a testament to how good the match was.

Unfortunately, Foley was suffering the impacts of a career's worth of big bumps come this time. The following month at No Way Out he would lose a WWE title vs career match, ending his full-time in-ring career.
