In her 2016 book, Balancing In Heels: My Journey to Health, Happiness, and Making It All Work, Kristin revealed that it was she who ended the engagement because "a few things needed to change" in the relationship, and Jay needed to see how serious she was. While Kristin admitted she was "dying inside" during the breakup period, she shared that she knew she didn't want to be a traditional stay-at-home mom while Jay was traveling with the NFL.
"If I stayed at home, I wouldn't be happy," Kristin wrote in her book, per Us Weekly. "And would probably end up resenting Jay for it."
Kristin explained that couples therapy saved the relationship after they learned how to communicate better. The mom-of-three also dished that she and her husband continued to occasionally see their therapist even after they were married.
During their time together, the couple's careers thrived. Jay served as quarterback for the Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins, while Kristin became an author and an entrepreneur. The couple also appeared together on Kristin's E! reality show, Very Cavallari.
After Jay retired from football in 2017, Kristin told Entertainment Tonight that the couple's roles had "shifted" with Jay at home with their kids more while she was out working.
"It's been interesting. We've really completely shifted roles, so it's just been trying to navigate this new normal," Kristin said last year.
The Hills alum explained that the couple's relationship worked because she and her husband could "make each other laugh." She also said they had a lot of "trust" in one another.
News of the famous couple's split comes one day after Kristin celebrated the third anniversary of her jewelry brand, Uncommon James. The former MTV star revealed that she started the company as a "side hustle" while she was a stay-at-home mom and that it turned into a full-blown business.
