Fantasia Barrino, ranked earlier this year by Billboard as the 9th most successfulAmerican Idol alumnus, has been named as a third party in a bitter divorce dispute in North Carolina.
Barrino owned a home in North Carolina as recently as 2008 (when she made news for an impending foreclosure), and the state is one of seven that have divorce laws with provisions the Chicago Sun Times refers to as “home wrecker laws.” While alienation of affection cases do occur from time to time, their implementation is exceedingly rare.
According to court documents in the divorce of Paula Cook and Antwaun Cook, Barrino may have implicated herself- she reported called the erstwhile Mrs. Cook and said:
“He don’t want you. Maybe the next time you get a husband you’ll know how to keep him. That’s why he is here with me.”
Court records also indicate that Barrino sports a shoulder tattoo bearing the legend “Cook,” and the Antwaun Cook has a “similar” tattoo in the same spot. It is also claimed that the two made a “sextape,” though the details of its content were not immediately available.
Fantasia Barrino was the 2004 American Idol winner, going on the appear in a Broadway version of The Color Purple. Her attendance during the run was said to be poor, and Idol flak have indicated she is unlikely to be invited back for alumni appearances on AI during the upcoming season.
