Manchester City and Manchester United renew their derby rivalry for the 171st time in a match that will stream live on Sunday, a match that could determine the fortunes of the two struggling Manchester clubs not only this season, but for next season as well — because the winner of this Manchester Derby has a legitimate chance to finish in the Barclays Premier League top four, and secure a cash-rich UEFA Champions League berth.
Manchester City holds the upper hand in that battle. The Citizens already sit in fourth place and caught a break on Saturday when fifth-place West Ham United played to a 2-2 draw with Chelsea. The stalemate left West Ham stranded on 50 points, a single point behind Manchester City.
United, however, faces a must-win situation on Sunday, with 47 points and sitting sixth. If United loses to Manchester City, seven points would separate the regional rivals with just eight games remaining on the Premier League fixture list for each — a near-impossible situation for United.
The visitors will continue to miss Wayne Rooney, as well as Ashley Young, Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Will Keane. But German international star Bastian Schweinsteiger is expected to return to the starting lineup for embattled Manchester United Manager Louis Van Gaal.
City will have to do without the Belgian international Captain Vincent Kompany, who re-injured his calf muscle in a mid-week Champions League match against Dynamo Kiev.
The last time Manchester United and Manchester City met in a Premier League Manchester Derby came on October 25, 2015. In that game, the two side played to an uninspiring goalless draw. To watch the highlights of that match, check out the video below.
To find out how to watch a live stream of the 171st Manchester Derby, Manchester City vs. Manchester United, see the streaming links in the final paragraph of this article. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time at Etihad Stadium in Manchester, England, on Sunday, March 20.
For fans in the United States, that start time will be noon in the Eastern Time Zone, 9 a.m. Pacific.
Manchester United have suffered from mediocrity all season, and come into the Sunday Manchester Derby winless in three matches, with draws in the league against Liverpool and West Ham in the FA Cup, which followed a 1-0 loss away at West Bromwich Albion.
Manchester City boss Manuel Pelligrini expressed the perhaps unrealistic belief that the derby match could make a difference in the title race.
“When you have the mathematical option to win the title, a club like Manchester United will always have that option,” the outgoing manager said this week. “Nothing is finished this season.”
But in terms of winning the title, even second-place Tottenham Hotspur may find that out of reach after first-place Leicester City edged Crystal Palace 1-0 on Saturday to reach 66 points — eight points up on Spurs and 15 ahead of Manchester City.
But Manchester United, though they still have two games in hand, sit 19 points removed from Leicester at the top of the league. Even if United were to somehow win every one of their nine remaining matches to capture the full 27 points, Leicester City would need only to grab nine points from seven matches to finish ahead of United.
