Proceedings in a 2019 murder case unraveled into pure chaos today when the defendant disrupted the court session by disrespecting and shouting at Ellen Sue Venzer, the presiding judge. Court records indicate the same defendant has a history of creating such disruptive drama.

Onelio Castro-Arroyo stabbed his wife, Yanelis González, 16 times inside a parked car at the Country Club Villas Park in Miami in 2019. He hurled the fatal attack on his wife in front of his seven-year-old autistic daughter. Then, 51 years old, Castro-Arroyo called the police shortly after the attack and confessed to killing his wife.

According to the police report by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, the couple had a troubled relationship for years and had recently separated.

Police arrived at an apartment block on NW 179th Street and found Castro-Arroyo’s wife dead inside her car with multiple stab wounds. Her young child, whom she shared with her estranged husband, was inside the car and witnessed the entire attack.

Officers tracked Castro-Arroyo down at a home on SW 11th Avenue and took him into custody. Surveillance video captured Castro-Arroyo taking off his t-shirt and throwing an unknown object into a dumpster. Investigators later retrieved his blood-soaked shirt and a sharp weapon from the same dumpster.

Authorities charged Castro-Arroyo with second-degree murder and tampering with physical evidence. He was held by the corrections officers at the Metrowest Detention Center without a bond.

He has a history of arrests for stealing fuel, including a 2014 incident where his improvised tanker sparked an explosion. According to Miami-Dade court records, his 2014 conviction resulted in a five-year prison sentence followed by probation, with 445 days credited for time already served. At the time of the murder, he was serving probation for that conviction.

A judge subsequently revoked his probation following the new charges, sentencing him to 60 years in prison.

During the latest session, Castro-Arroyo appeared displeased with the proceedings. Courtroom camera footage shows him standing in his orange prison attire and handcuffs. He kept shouting at Judge Venzer in Spanish and even pounding his hand on the table at times.

“Not an attorney to represent him, and that it’s good that the cameras are here today to listen to this,” a translator explained what Castro-Arroyo was saying.

“And this judge wants to condemn me by force,” he added.

When asked whether he wishes to accept a plea deal, he replied, “I’m not going to accept anything.”

The defendant kept up the heated confrontation for about 30 minutes before the court order was restored. Castro-Arroyo’s trial date has been set for October 19th.

Judge Venzer handled the situation professionally. She politely asked him not to interrupt her. Notably, it was the same judge with whom Castro-Arroyo got into an argument during a 2023 probation violation hearing.

At that time, he acted clueless and kept complaining that his attorneys were not representing him, insisting he didn’t understand what was going on.

Judge Venzer shut down his act, saying, “You’re a smart man. Doctors have evaluated you. You are competent!”
