An unlicensed driver in New Jersey struck a mother with her two children while they were crossing a parking lot. The crash injured the woman and her five-year-old daughter and killed the nine-month-old son.

The incident occurred around 11.55 a.m. on Friday, August 28, in the parking lot of the kosher grocery store NPGS in Jackson Township.

The Jackson Township Police Department responded to the report of the car crash. Upon arrival, they found two injured children along with their mother. At the time of the crash, the mother, Golda Chana, was pushing her kids in a stroller through the parking lot.

According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the accused driver is identified as 20-year-old Maria CobonGuzman. She was pulling over in her vehicle when she struck the family.  

 

The victims were taken to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where the infant was pronounced dead. According to YNET News, the infant was identified as Yitzhak Rosenberg, who was critically injured at the scene and succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, the mother underwent an emergency surgery at the hospital. She and her daughter are in stable condition and continue to receive treatment for their injuries.

The multi-department investigation included the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, Lakewood Township Police Department, Jackson Township Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, which worked together to investigate the crime scene.

 

The investigation concluded CobonGuzman did not own a valid driver’s license in this or any other state. 

The driver was accompanied by a 22-year-old woman, Ariadna Lazaro-Flores of Toms River. Both were arrested and taken to the Ocean County Jail. They will remain there until their detention hearing.

CobonGuzman was charged with manslaughter, operating a motor vehicle without ever having possessed or being issued a valid driver’s license while involved in a fatal motor vehicle crash, and two counts of assault by auto.

Lazaro-Flores was also charged because she knew CobonGuzman did not possess a valid license to drive a vehicle. She was charged with knowingly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of death to another.
