A Nebraska man revealed his pet dog saved his life during a house fire. A Husky named Ellie Rose woke him up just before the fire destroyed his whole house. The fire spread across the house, and had he not woken up at the right time, he would have lost his life.
The pet dog he got in February woke him up as she sensed fire in the house. Daniel Naillieux said, “Just recently, she’s really warmed up to me, and she’s been hanging out with me a lot more often. Now, I got her riding around with me everywhere.”
On the night of the fire, Naillieux came home and went straight to bed. He explained the dog is friendly and follows him around the house. She always lies next to him. However, that night, “She was terrified of something.” Around midnight, the dog woke him up with a weird sound he had never heard before.
He woke up and opened the bedroom door to find thick black smoke. He added, “I got about two steps into the hallway and realized, ‘We’re not gonna make it out of this house.’” He grabbed Ellie Rose and crawled out from the bedroom window. From there he went to the roof of the house and called 911 for help.
The first responders arrived at his Wahoo home in three minutes. He tossed the dog into one of the officer’s arms. Then they placed a ladder to rescue him. He climbed down the ladder safely.
Naillieux praised the police officer, “That cop is something special. He did not care. It melted part of the front end of my truck. That’s how hot it was. And he still got closer than my truck was to grab that ladder and get back to the back of the house.”
Unfortunately, he lost everything that he owned in the house. He appreciated the dog for saving his life. “I’ve never been more thankful to have a dog in my life. Because I am telling you, if she wouldn’t have barked, I would not have woken up. They would have been pulling me out of that house,” Naillieux said.
He expressed sadness after losing everything: “I’m not OK. I lost everything I own in that house. I have a single pair of clothes. And I went and bought these clothes. I got these boots. I have nothing left.
Saunders County started an assistance program on Facebook so people can contribute to help Naillieux and his family. He has a wife and three kids who were not at home at the time of the fire. Any donations will go directly to the family to help them during this difficult time.
The post reads, “Right now, they are beginning the difficult journey of rebuilding their lives. Every donation—no matter the amount—will help provide the essentials they need and remind them they are not facing this alone.” It has a Venmo link to send funds to the family of five that has lost their house and all its belongings in the fire.
