What was supposed to be a family birthday gathering at a popular Mississippi restaurant unfortunately turned into an awful experience for one Black customer, and she described it as “one of the most racist, humiliating, and unacceptable customer service experiences.” The incident has since gained traction on social media, sparking public outcry over a law enforcement officer’s response to the dispute.

It all started when Tiffany Wilson and her party visited the Sippin Silo Wine Bar in Southaven on Saturday to celebrate her mother’s birthday. However, they got into a heated argument with the management over seating arrangements, and the authority called the cops.

One responding police officer received criticism for taking an aggressive stance against the group of Black women during the encounter. Wilson noted that there was police contact, which escalated the situation further. Wilson and her party appeared visibly scared as the officer cornered one of them when she tried to explain what really happened. He demanded that they hand over their driver’s licenses.

“I’m going to give the orders now, and you’re going to listen. That’s how this is going to go,” the officer can be heard saying. “I need DLs from all three of you. I’m telling you right now, give me your DL, or you will be placed under arrest.”

The restaurant has since released a statement explaining the reason behind the viral altercation.

“We want to acknowledge the concerns raised following recent events at Sippin Silo last night. We recognize that the video circulating online, particularly the involvement of law enforcement, has been upsetting and concerning. We especially want to acknowledge the concerns expressed by the members of our community. We sincerely apologize for the hurt and concern this situation has caused, and we regret that the interaction escalated to the point of involving law enforcement.”

Venue management stated that Wilson’s party was initially turned away on Friday and Saturday for requesting a 10-person table beyond capacity limits. After downsizing to a party of six, the group was seated. Management alleged that additional guests joined the table before the group deemed the space unsuitable and walked out.

“Shortly afterward, members of the group returned inside. They were talking at the host stand which then became cursing towards our staff, and the group was asked to leave. When the situation continued and the group did not leave, the decision was made to contact law enforcement. Just as much it is our responsibility to care for our customers, we will also stand up for our staff. We are a small business continuously learning and growing from our mistakes,” they said in their statement.

The management emphasized that the establishment’s party-size guidelines apply equally to all guests regardless of race or background.

“We understand why seeing that portion of the interaction has raised serious concerns. We want to be clear that the decision regarding seating and the subsequent decision to contact law enforcement were not based on the race of the guests involved. The seating decision was based on our existing party-size policy and available accommodations, and law enforcement was contacted only after the later interaction escalated.”

Wilson has responded to the statement, calling the restaurant’s handling of the situation targeted and racially motivated.

“Calling the police and or threaten to call the police is an aggression. Police are used to weaponize fear towards black people /African Americans/people of color. This is why we WAITED for the police so we could share and discuss the events. Instead he did EXACTLY what the owner needed him to do. Be USED for fear and intimidation. It’s just ironic we actually got a responding officer that ACTUALLY uses intimidation to his advantage.

“There was NO CRIME committed. We did NOT disrespect and or cuss his staff. Kevin Patel was hostile and rude from the moment we arrived. We did NOT make reservations the day or night before. We were walk -ins. We ONLY had clarifing questions about the seating.”

Most netizens sided with the group of restaurant-goers and ripped into the police officer for being aggressive.

“This is horrible and so unnecessary. I can only imagine what would have happened if you were not recording and the other officers didn’t come,” one commentator said.

Another added, “He was on a power trip! “I’m the primary officer here investigating this call”😒 he wanted to escalate the situation so badly but the other officers weren’t having it!”
