A Kentucky woman who received a liver transplant as a toddler will marry the brother of the boy whose organ saved her life, according to the New York Post.

Brooklyn Dotson will marry Noah Waters on Sept. 26. Dotson’s donor was Michael Waters, Noah’s older brother, who died in an accident after being struck by a car in Dayton, Ohio.

Dotson was diagnosed with a rare liver condition in 2003. Doctors estimated that she had three days to live and advised her mother to contact a funeral home. Her mother declined to do so, and a donor liver was located in time for Dotson to undergo transplant surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

That donor was Michael Waters. According to the outlet, Waters had told his parents at a young age that he wanted to be an organ donor. After he was struck and killed by a car, his parents followed through on his wish, donating his organs, including the liver that went to Dotson.

The transplant introduced Dotson to Michael’s younger brother, Noah. The children grew close in the wake of Dotson’s surgery, in the years that followed.

Dotson revealed that she first began to develop romantic feelings for Noah around the time of her birthday. Her mother reached out to him to let him know, and he visited her that same weekend, she said.

Noah Waters described his brother as unusually selfless for his age. “Even as a kid, he’d do anything for anybody,” he told Lex 18, adding that Michael “was way more mature than he needed to be.”

He said he had no way of knowing, at the time of his brother’s death, that Michael’s donation would eventually connect him to his future wife. “I had no idea that my brother was gonna save my wife’s life 20 years later,” Noah Waters said.

Dotson said she hopes to carry on Michael’s memory. “I get to enjoy life because of him, and I get to live and hopefully honor his memory the best way that I can,” she told Lex 18. Noah Waters noted that Dotson will take the Waters surname after the wedding, tying her formally to the family of the boy who saved her life.

The couple’s wedding website states that their lives were connected from the moment of the transplant. Details on the location and size of the September ceremony were not immediately available. It was not clear whether Michael Waters’ parents plan to attend.
