Former NFL and college football player Demetrius Byrd was arrested on Monday after threatening passengers with a knife aboard a Miami-Dade transit bus in Miami Beach. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near Abbott Avenue and Indian Creek Drive on North Beach, Florida.
The former NFL draftee appeared in front of a judge, who found probable cause for the charges. Byrd was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he was held on a $5,000 bond. Police interviewed the bus driver and a passenger. Both said they saw Byrd wave a knife at passengers, according to Law and Crime. The bus driver stated that she witnessed Byrd waving the knife and threatening passengers.

According to Local10, Byrd was argumentative with passengers since he boarded the bus. One passenger told investigators he attempted to calm Byrd before the confrontation escalated. However, the exchange became heated, leading the witness to tell Byrd to ‘shut up.’ Byrd would then produce a silver multi-tool from his pocket, drawing the blade. He then allegedly walked toward the passenger and said, “Who wants to die today?”
Byrd was found near the bus and searched by officers. Officers found the “silver multi-tool” in his shorts. He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to CBS News, Byrd also faces an outstanding warrant in a separate domestic violence case. Furthermore, he is listed as being homeless.

Byrd, now 40, attended Miami Central Senior High School, where he was the leading player in receiving yards. He would later play for Louisiana State University. Byrd was drafted into the NFL by the San Diego Chargers, but never played on the field. He was drafted in 2009, but was released the following year after a car accident. (via CBS News)
