A Columbus man who was convicted in the 2020 death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son was sentenced this week to 13 to 18½ years in prison, after evading arrest for years and fleeing to Massachusetts, according to Law&Crime.
Dioblis Williams, 26, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment in the death of Ja’Mir Jones, according to WCMH. He had initially only been charged with murder.
Investigators were informed by 911 dispatch on March 25, 2020, that the toddler had drowned in a bathtub. Officers arrived to find the boy unresponsive. He was pronounced dead after being taken to a children’s hospital, and the case was ruled a homicide, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

An autopsy determined Ja’Mir had not drowned. His lungs showed no signs of obstruction, and the medical examiner attributed his death to blunt force trauma to the abdomen. The boy also had bruises on his face, torso, and neck, as was revealed by the examiner.
In body camera footage, Williams could be heard telling officers at the scene that the child had drowned. According to an affidavit reviewed by the station, Williams, who was dating Ja’Mir’s mother at the time, repeatedly struck the boy after the child had a diaper accident, directly leading to his death.

Almost five years passed before Williams was taken into custody on August 27, 2025, in connection with the 2020 homicide case. The U.S. Marshals Service announced a warrant for his arrest after tracking him roughly 750 miles from Columbus to Framingham, Massachusetts. On Aug. 27, a K-9 officer with the Framingham Police Department, on his way to a briefing, spotted a pair of pedestrians, one of whom appeared to be wearing a wig, authorities said.
Officers determined the person in the wig matched the fugitive being sought by the Marshals Service and a regional violent-fugitive task force, according to the Framingham Police Department. Williams was arrested and extradited to Ohio to face charges. He was sentenced this week following his guilty plea, closing out a case that began with his 911 call more than six years earlier.
