President Donald Trump recently underwent a medical checkup, following which his personal physician addressed concerns about his weight gain. He also issued some crucial health advice for the POTUS, who will soon be ringing in his 80th birthday this month.
On Tuesday, May 26, Trump underwent a medical exam at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center involving 22 specialists and three hours of testing. On Friday, May 29, the White House released a memo by the president’s physician, Captain Sean Barbabella, who stated that Trump has “strong cardiac, pulmonary, neurological and overall physical function.” He said that the Commander-in-Chief is “fully fit” to serve and that he is in “excellent health” overall.
"President Trump remains in excellent health… Cognitive and physical performance are excellent. He is fully fit to carry out all duties of the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State."

The medical exam included a range of procedures such as a CT scan, cancer screenings, heart imaging, and a cognitive assessment. According to the memo, Trump’s resting heart rate was recorded at 73 beats per minute, which makes his cardiac age 14 years younger than his actual age.
He allegedly scored a full score: 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, which is given to check for dementia and cognitive impairment.
Dr. Barbabella, however, addressed a key concern regarding Trump’s health, and that is his increasing weight.

According to CNBC, Trump weighed 238 lbs at the recent test in May. That is a gain of 14 pounds since his medical test in April 2025. At 6 feet, 3 inches (1.9 meters) tall, he is now technically in the “overweight” category with a body mass index (BMI) of 29.7, just slightly below 30 — the clinical obesity threshold.
Barbabella claimed that Trump has been advised to improve his diet and include more physical activity in his routine.
The physician also said he prescribed two cholesterol medications to Trump: rosuvastatin and ezetimibe. He also made a switch to low-dose aspirin.
Trump’s total cholesterol was 143 at this exam, down sharply from 223 in 2018, attributed to ongoing statin therapy.
“Preventive counselling was provided, including guidance on diet, recommendation to take a low-dose aspirin, increased physical activity, and continued weight loss,” Dr. Barbabella said.

The memo also alleged that Trump has “slight lower leg swelling” but noted that his chronic venous insufficiency has improved since last year. The condition, diagnosed in July 2025, causes blood to pool in the legs as the legs’ veins fail to pump blood to the heart.
Barbabella’s memo also addressed the repeated bruising on the back of Trump’s hands. It said that it was caused by “minor soft tissue irritation related to frequent handshaking” and aspirin therapy.
Despite this, Barbabella insisted that Trump is in excellent condition and fully fit to serve as President of the United States. “His demanding daily schedule, including multiple high-level meetings, public engagements and regular physical activity, continues to support his overall well-being,” Barbabella said. “The President remains up to date on all appropriate preventive screenings and immunisations.”
