One of the most scandalous and troublesome marriages of all time was that of King Charles and Princess Diana. The royal family’s power couple, who were supposed to take on the world together, decided to take each other down instead.
Despite King Charles’ wedding to Queen Camilla and Princess Diana’s unfortunate and untimely death, rumors about their marriage still circulate like hot gossip to this day.
The latest in that string of rumors is the claim that Princess Diana pushed Charles into Camilla’s arms. According to The Royal Observer, former royal butler Paul Burrell alleged in his book A Royal Duty that Prince Philip accused Princess Diana of pushing then-Prince Charles over the edge in their marriage and eventually into Camilla’s life.
Reportedly, Princess Diana was deeply hurt by Prince Philip’s remarks. She struggled to accept that she played a role in the collapse of her marriage.
Burrell stated in his book that the late Prince Philip once wrote a letter to Diana regarding her marriage and Charles and Camilla’s affair. In the letter, Prince Philip allegedly wrote that Diana “should have been grateful that her husband had, initially, cut himself off from Camilla Parker Bowles.”
Prince Philip added that then-Prince Charles also felt disheartened that, despite having made a “considerable sacrifice” in cutting ties with Camilla, Princess Diana did “not appreciate what he had done.”
Charles was Princess Diana’s first love. From a purely physical comparison, how on earth would he have chosen Camilla over Princess Diana? 😳

Burrell wrote in A Royal Duty:
“What stunned the princess was when Prince Philip raised the thorny issue of her husband’s mistress.”
However, the most painful part of the letter for Diana was when Prince Philip accused her of ruining her own marriage. Prince Philip allegedly wrote in the letter:
“Can you honestly look into your heart and say that Charles’ relationship with Camilla had nothing to do with your behavior towards him in your marriage?”
This came as a shock to Princess Diana, and she was devastated by the accusation, as she had always tried to keep Charles away from Camilla. Burrell wrote:
“The princess was being accused of driving Prince Charles into the arms of the one woman she had tried to keep him away from. Even a year on, the idea made her blood boil.”
Before her wedding, Princess Diana was in tears after discovering Charles had ordered Camilla a bracelet engraved with their secret nicknames ‘Gladys’ & ‘Fred’.
She later described walking down the aisle as feeling ‘like a lamb to the slaughter’.💔👑pic.twitter.com/17PflSyhCo

Allegedly, Princess Diana also vented her frustration with Burrell, accusing the Royal Family of siding with Charles. She said:
“They are all the bloody same—looking after one another!”
The letter also came as a shock to Princess Diana, as it was very different from Prince Philip’s original thoughts about Charles and Camilla’s situation. According to the publication, in a previous letter, Prince Philip expressed his disapproval of Charles and Diana’s extramarital affairs. He also blamed then-Prince Charles for ruining his marriage.
In an earlier letter to Princess Diana, he reportedly wrote:
“We do not approve of either of you having lovers. Charles was silly to risk everything with Camilla for a man in his position.
We never dreamed he might feel like leaving you for her. I cannot imagine anyone in their right mind leaving you for Camilla.”
