Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s former U.K. home could soon be restored to its original state. According to reports, plans have been underway to undo the £2.4 million renovations that were primarily done at Frogmore Cottage, a Windsor property gifted to the couple by Queen Elizabeth II. The reported move comes nearly three years after they officially vacated the property in 2023.

According to The Sun, Frogmore Cottage was apparently two semi-detached homes before being gifted by the Queen to her grandson, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle, as a wedding gift in 2018.

The couple spent massive sums of money to renovate the home, which was reportedly paid for by the Sovereign Grant. This British government-funded system finances official royal duties using public money. However, the report suggests that Prince Harry repaid the £2.4 million six months after stepping down from his royal duties and was officially ousted by King Charles in 2023.

The sources close to the development shared with the publication that the options have now been determined regarding what to do with the property next. As per one claim, the idea is to subdivide the property, and an evaluation is underway to determine if the house could be divided again. The source, however, clarified that the building hasn’t started yet.

As per tipsters, a major and expensive renovation will be required to bring the cottage owned by the Crown Estate back to what they described as “pre-Meghan and Harry era.”

A source said, “It’s been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn’t good enough for him to move in,” further adding that removing all the traces of Harry and Meghan from the property might make it appealing to potential occupants within the royal household. The source suggested the move would help close a difficult chapter in Frogmore Cottage’s history. It would also restore the property to how it was before Harry and Meghan lived there.

The Sun report notes that it nearly took a year to modify the cottage for the Sussexes. The changes included the creation of a yoga studio. Upgrades also covered replacing structural beams and floor supports, updating the electrical system, and installing new gas and water lines.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly covered the cost of their own fixtures and fittings, including a £5,000 copper bathtub. They also paid for decoration by Soho House designer Vicky Charles, which included vegan paint.

The couple moved into the cottage shortly before their second child, Archie’s birth in 2019, but left for Canada later that year. However, the final nail in the coffin was when the couple stepped down as working royals and moved to California in 2020.

Harry and Meghan reportedly stayed at Frogmore Cottage during the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and for her funeral in 2022. There has been constant chatter and curiosity around Harry and his family’s return to the U.K. But there’s no official communication about whether he is actually considering to reunite with his family in near future.
