Yashira Marie Maldonado, 34, reported to police that she wanted a break from taking care of her 13-year-old daughter. This was the explanation that the mother had for chaining her daughter to the fence in the scorching Hialeah, Florida, sun.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, drawing sharp condemnation from responding officers. The investigation was initiated after Maldonado’s mother reported the situation to the police, and the event was subsequently confirmed by a neighbor’s Ring camera footage.

The teenager, who had been left tied to a chair alongside a bag of clothes and medication, was discovered by her great-grandmother. Fearing eviction if she involved law enforcement, the great-grandmother initially contacted the girl’s mother instead of the authorities. Ultimately, the girl’s father alerted the police after learning of the situation.

Officers found the teenager still chained to the fence. Maldonado was arrested on July 11, 2026. She was charged with child abuse and child neglect. She has since been released on a bond and has been forbidden to contact her child under any circumstances.
