We all have heard stories about people being catfished or disappointed by how their date looks in real life. However, one Reddit user shared a funny encounter with a date that ended up boosting her confidence right after a breakup, as she was accused of “reverse-catfishing” her date.

Ever since breaking up with an ex of three years, whom she was supposed to be engaged to, Reddit user Ok-Data-7672 turned her grief into a journey of style experimentation. She figured out what type of fashion complemented her body type and also learned to do her makeup in a way that would grant her praise from random strangers.

That evening, her preparation paid off during a casual coffee date. Exuding newfound confidence in her elevated appearance, the self-proclaimed “plain Jane” found she was getting attention from men who previously wouldn’t have given her a second glance.

Another surprise was waiting for her. She wrote that she arrived on a casual date. Arriving early to the cafe, the Redditor was paying for her drink when her date walked in. He stopped and stared, asking if she was really the person he was looking for.

When she confirmed she was, he looked completely taken aback. The user wrote that he started exclaiming out loud that he hadn’t even recognized her and felt like he had been “reverse catfished.”

The user said that the absolute best part of the evening came from a stranger across the room. Another girl in the cafe was actively checking her out, turning her head to give the user her full, undivided attention. And it made her day.

She even provided an update on her date for all the curious commentators. She said that despite his checking all the boxes, she felt zero romantic “spark” or physical attraction toward him.

“The guy was pleasant to talk to, decent looking. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t feel any spark or chemistry (also I didn’t really feel physically attractive to them despite them being tall and having a head full of hair :P). He asked me out on a second date, but I will be politely declining it,” she wrote, replying to one comment under her original post.

Another user had one piece of advice for all the people who are looking for love on dating apps.

“This was my go to when I used apps. I never posted my best pics. I chose pics that were accurate but not overwhelmingly flattering. I figured that I would much rather people be pleasantly surprised when meeting for the first time. Being told you look better than your pictures is a great way to start a date,” they wrote.

A Reddit user chimed in, saying, “Amazing! That sounds like his tone was complimentary. I’ve had a guy say “you look way hotter than your pictures” and it legit felt like negging, trying to confuse me or something. Ugh what a fun time feeling so pretty 🙂 Get it!”

However, one user pointed out an underlying issue with modern dating, “Ironic that so many men claim they prefer a “natural women” yet are the first ones to look closer when a woman enhances her appearance with well done makeup and nice clothes lol.”
