The Chesterfield County Police Department discovered a 19-year-old hiding in a women’s dormitory closet hours after a weekend shooting at Virginia State University. They were able to locate him after pinging his cellphone after the incident left five people injured.

According to court documents, Camron Harris, who is not enrolled at the university, was taken into custody Saturday afternoon following the early-morning violence near the Quad Annexes, NBC News reported.

Court filings indicate that the shooting allegedly stemmed from an argument involving Harris. Investigators noted that Harris subsequently discussed the incident in direct messages on Instagram following the shooting.

Less than 20 minutes before the violence took place, Harris allegedly posted an Instagram Story from the campus of the historically Black university. Investigators also uncovered DMs in which he reportedly discussed obtaining a firearm and opening fire on the school.

While inspecting Harris’s phone, a detective discovered photos of a firearm that matched the weapon on his Instagram account and refuted the suspect’s claim that he didn’t possess one.

Harris also confirmed that he was the only one to access his Instagram account. However, investigators noted that the app itself had been deleted before the search. Before that, Harris reportedly referenced an active Instagram group chat that involved multiple individuals connected to the Virginia State University shooting.

Several witnesses came forward following the incident. One individual informed police that Harris had been involved in a verbal dispute earlier that day. They claimed that a friend overheard Harris threaten to return to the university to carry out a shooting.

A second individual made a similar claim and reported hearing a man named Camron planned to open fire over an earlier argument.

An Instagram account messaged Harris: “u heard them shots,” and Harris replied, “It was us.”

There is a brief thread of messages between Harris and another individual, just before he carried out the shooting.

The user texted him, “Wanna go on a walk,” to which Harris replied, “I’m so rn,” adding, “I’m tryna find the gun.” The user then messaged, “Wait,” along with an emoji of a cat laughing. Harris replied, “Oh yes.” The user said, “Lemme help you.” Harris replied, “Ale got it.” He next sent a photo of a handgun.

Police also discovered one text from Harris in which he said, “We js got the shootin.”

The investigation began around 1.30 a.m. Saturday when police were dispatched to the university campus near Petersburg following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered vehicles with bullet holes in them and damaged structures across the area. They also recovered a firearm and numerous spent cartridge casings from the scene.

The shooting left a 21-year-old man in critical condition. Four other individuals suffered non-life-threatening injuries, including a 20-year-old VSU student, a 19-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man, and a 17-year-old juvenile.

Court records show Harris faces multiple felony charges, including counts of malicious wounding and the use of a firearm.
