57-year-old Mia Bieniemy, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was shot in her home in Ashburn, Virginia, on Sunday. According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, Mia called 911 herself, prompting deputies to respond to the Bieniemy residence at 7.32 p.m.
In video published by NBC News, deputies can be seen forcing open the front door before entering the home. A neighbor’s doorbell camera also captured Mia being carried from the residence after she was found with multiple gunshot wounds and taken to a nearby hospital.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities said he was taken into custody after deputies responded to Mia’s 911 call before being formally charged the following day. According to a criminal complaint, he is accused of shooting his mother with a .22-caliber gun.
Heartbreaking. Can’t imagine the weight of this for Eric, both as a coach and a father.

Mia suffered gunshot wounds to her left forearm and shoulder. Elijah Bieniemy faces felony charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling.
He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center. Eric Bieniemy was attending the Chiefs’ training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, on Sunday and was absent from the team’s workout on Monday, CNN reported.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid talked about the incident, saying, “I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and we’ll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus.”
Speaking about Mia, Reid added, “She’s a saint; we all know that, those of you that know her. One of God’s great blessings. But things happen. And you have to work through it. That’s where we’re at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal.”
So heartbreaking. Praying for her full recovery and strength for the whole family. 🙏💔

Reid said he could not confirm when Eric would return to his duties with the Chiefs. In the meantime, pass game coordinator Joe Bleymaier and offensive line coach Andy Heck are expected to assume his responsibilities. The Ashburn home where the shooting occurred was reportedly purchased while Bieniemy was serving as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.
