Initially, there were multiple suspects at large; thus, there were no arrests; however, the police found the Henrico gunman, who lives 30 miles from the university. Identified as 19-year-old Camron Harris, he was found hiding inside the Seward Hall dorm. He was hiding in the campus closet for more than 14 hours after the shooting.

Harris is not enrolled in the university. According to Fox 59, he was arrested around 4 p.m. while the campus was on lockdown till 8:22 a.m. Harris is currently being held at the county jail without bail. He has been charged with four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Meanwhile, VSU police will be present on campus as the investigation continues. The university released a statement on social media: “We recognize the concern this incident has caused among our students, parents, alumni, friends, and the broader VSU community. The safety and well-being of our students remain our highest priority. The authorities are working with law enforcement and will update the students via email.

A freshman from Ohio, Julia Lewis, heard gunshots from her dorm. She told a reporter, “I was falling asleep and woke up, and all you could hear was a whole bunch of bullets, and I’d never heard bullets that close before.”

She continued, “I opened my window, and all you could see was police and people running. People were running for like a good minute.”

The news quickly went viral on social media. Netizens chimed in to express their frustration and grief. One X user commented, “Every time this happens the same script plays: lockdown, thoughts & prayers, zero accountability. Maybe start securing the damn campus and stop pretending this is just “gun violence” with no other causes.”

Another one posted, “So scary. It’s stressful enough that we send our kids off to these Universities. Ramp up campus security now!” “Hoping the police figure out what happened quickly so people can stop holding their breath,” wrote one more. Another one commented, “Absolutely horrific what happened at Virginia State University. Praying for the victims.”
