Two high-profile homicide suspects, Daisy Link and Dr. Neha Gupta, are embroiled in an ongoing dispute behind bars at a South Florida detention facility.

According to court filings, Gupta, a 37-year-old former Oklahoma physician who is accused of killing her four-year-old daughter, is formally requesting a separation order after allegedly being physically assaulted by fellow murder accused Link, 31, inside the Turner Guilford-Knight Correctional Center in Miami.

Legal documents reveal that Link, who is awaiting a new trial in a separate homicide case, faces additional battery charges stemming from an unprovoked attack in which she repeatedly struck Gupta.

According to the emergency motion, Link allegedly landed at least 50 punches on Gupta, and there was no verbal exchange between the two inmates.

“Miss Link physically assaulted Ms. Gupta inside her cell, causing pain and bruising to her face along with permanent damage to her prescription glasses. Ms. Gupta was alone in her cell when the door opened, and Daisy Link entered and proceeded to punch Ms. Gupta in the face repeatedly,” Gupta’s attorney told the court. 

In custody since 2022, Link is convicted of second-degree murder in the death of her husband of nine years, which was later overturned. She now faces at least seven additional battery charges stemming from incidents behind bars, six of which involve alleged attacks targeting Gupta.

“Miss Link is on the bottom tier of the unit. She is not allowed out of her cell at the same time as Miss Gupta,” Gupta’s attorney told Judge Zachary M. James.

However, despite Gupta’s request, the judge refrained from ordering immediate action in relation to the assaults during the latest proceedings. “Court does not have the authority to grant the motion at this time for a keep separate order. I would again recommend that corrections stay on top of this issue, which they have been doing to ensure that they are separated,” Judge James said.

Gupta’s underlying case centers on the death of her daughter at a vacation rental home in South Florida. Detectives allege she staged the death of her daughter to appear as an accidental drowning in the rental home’s pool in the middle of the night.

In a chilling 911 call, she told the operator, “We were sleeping, and I heard some noise. She was in the pool, and I tried to save her, but I don’t know how to swim. She went down in the pool.”

While the dispatcher encouraged her to save her daughter, she ignored it and repeatedly asked how far EMS units were.

According to the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office, they found no water in the child’s stomach or lungs and believed she was smothered to death before being placed in the pool. Court records show prior to the incident, Gupta’s estranged husband had been seeking full custody of their daughter, citing Gupta’s deteriorating mental condition.

Link’s violent assaults on Gupta may not be completely abrupt. Testimony revealed in court suggests the retaliation stems from Gupta serving as a witness in an active case against Link.
