A forensic toxicologist testified in the trial of Massachusetts mom Lindsay Clancy, who has been accused of killing her three children in January 2023. Justin Brower, a forensic toxicologist with NMS Laboratories, testified in court, shedding light on the levels of four medications found in Clancy’s blood test when Lindsay Clancy strangled her kids and tried to commit suicide.
The four drugs were antidepressant mirtazapine, the antidepressant trazodone, quetiapine, a drug used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and mood stabilizer lamotrigine. A doctor prescribed them to treat insomnia, depressive, and bipolar episodes during postpartum.
Brower concluded in court that the levels of the drugs were within the therapeutic limit. He added that only quetiapine was slightly elevated but not at a suicidal or toxic level. he said, “Usually people take handfuls of pills when they’re trying to harm themselves and take their own life, and this is not consistent with that.”
According to the prosecutors, Clancy premeditated the murders, while her defense team has called her a loving mother who was going through postpartum psychosis. When Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, spoke to the toxicology expert, he agreed that the levels of drugs in the blood don’t tell the entire story.

Reddington also reminded him, “And in this particular instance, you were not provided any further information about the case or the investigation to make any more opinions about effects.” The expert replied, “I knew nothing about this case until we spoke. I think it was probably a few weeks ago.”
The Defense attorney continuously doubted whether Clancy was overmedicated, which may have driven her to the murder of her children. Earlier, a psychiatrist testified in court about Clancy’s mental state after the incident. Her ex-husband also gave an emotional testimony, where he asked for empathy for Lindsay Clancy.
The courtroom video was posted on the Law&Crime Trials YouTube channel and has over 170K views. The case is still under trial and continues to spark online debate over people supporting Clancy while others blame her entirely. Meanwhile, some people have partly blamed her ex-husband, who left her home alone while she was struggling.
The video has almost 1500 comments, with people describing the toxicologist’s testimony. One viewer commented, “People who don’t have severe mental illness don’t know how powerful those intrusive thoughts can be. It is truly horrifying what one can do.”
One more posted, “I have bipolar 1. I had mania & psychosis brought on by an SSRI. Her response to these medications at ANY dose should have been a glaringly obvious red flag to any of her providers. Nobody is excusing what she did. We ALL want for this never to happen again. That starts at recognizing how horrifically negligent the medical system can be.”
Many people blame the medical system for failing Clancy as a mom. She was on a cocktail of 13 prescription drugs while she tried to get help for postpartum psychosis and hallucinations. Clancy and her ex-husband filed a lawsuit against the doctor who treated her during that time.
“It’s interesting how this case really sheds light on who does and doesn’t take mental health seriously,” chimed in one more viewer. Another one posted, “It’s not the amount, it’s their effects on the brain at any dose!” One more commented, “She was negligent in looking after her own self and clearly decided to unalive the kids after making a to- go order for hubby to pick up.”
