A forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Jhilam Biswas, testified in court during the ongoing trial of Massachusetts mom Lindsay Clancy. She was accused of killing her three children by strangling them using an exercise band in January 2023. She also tried to kill herself, but ended up getting hurt and is now in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Biswas’ testimony explained her brief interaction with Clancy, who was intubated on a hospital bed, awaiting spinal surgery after the incident.

The psychiatrist was there to establish if she was fit to make decisions for her surgery or what symptoms she was experiencing after the incident. She said in court that Clancy could not speak but could write. A few of her first questions were whether “her body was broken” or whether “she had a lawyer.”

The psychiatrist said, “So we asked her, you know, why are you feeling horrified? And then she wrote down ‘do I have an attorney?’ And I said with my team that at this time we’re just getting to know you and getting to know the case, and we’re not sure exactly you know what is happening. And we asked her, “Do you have questions for us?” And she asked, “Is my body broken? Are my legs straight?”

She further explained, “At the time that I saw her, she was intubated. And that in and of itself is very uncomfortable. And so she seemed very anxious.”

 

Biswas said in court that she did not observe signs of psychosis or disorganized thinking during the roughly 20-minute evaluation. The defense attorney asked Biswas, “How long were you evaluating her?” She replied, “20 minutes to 30 minutes.”

He asked her, “Is psychosis something that has to continue, or does it stop?” The doctor responded that the symptoms vary from different factors such as age, number of episodes, and type of psychosis.

The attorney asked if she was aware of Clancy’s medical history, to which she said she only had a portion of it in the medical record. She admitted she knew about her postpartum anxiety but not postpartum depression.

 

The defense attorney pointed out that Clancy had an episode of going 48 hours without sleep. Biswas responded, “I don’t recall that exactly from the record.” She further expressed not knowing about her homicidal ideation despite knowing about the suicidal thoughts. The attorney also reminded her about Clancy coding the day before and tubes being inserted in her chest. “I think that happened after, but I don’t recall because I don’t have the records on me,” she replied.

Clancy’s attorney wanted to establish that the psychiatrist had limited knowledge about her case and did not know about her history. On the flip side, the prosecutors pressed on Clancy’s first query, being whether she has a lawyer. The courtroom video was shared by Law & Crime Trials on YouTube and has over 100K views.

There have been divided opinions among the public, as some consider Clancy guilty of the murder of her three kids. On the other hand, many believe she was under postpartum psychosis and medication effects. One viewer took a dig at Clancy, “Imagine waking up from ‘psychosis’ & not asking about ur children, but asking for a lawyer!”

One more asked, “She never asked about her children?” “Why is this man (defense attorney) yelling at most of the witnesses like they have killed 3 kids,” asked one more. To this, a person replied, “Because they’re providing half-truths and leaving out information important to her defense.”

The forensic psychiatrist failed to remember a lot of things from Clancy’s chart and did not have access to all the records. Viewers noticed that, and one commented, “I think he’s trying to show the jury that this Dr only met her for a short amount of time & kind of discredits what she says.”
