As partners in invention and co-founders of a charity empire, Bill Gates and Melinda Gates were one of America’s most influential power couples for 34 years. Interestingly, their unexpected divorce announcement shook the world in 2021.
After nearly three decades of marriage, the two of them wrote in a joint statement, “We no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives.” Yet, behind their cleverly curated press release was a much more chaotic story, one that was connected with embarrassing links to Jeffrey Epstein, improper conduct at work, and cheating.
Their relationship started at a Microsoft dinner event in 1987.
They got along because of their shared love of books and smarts. Melinda once remembered how their relationship became stronger during bizarre math-themed date nights. They courted for seven years before they tied the knot in 1994.
Bill had appeared shocked by the leap even at that time. He said, “Amazingly, she makes me feel like getting married.”
By 2020, there were obvious fractures in their marriage.
Having already floated the idea of separation, Melinda was emotionally exhausted. Yet a series of charges that laid out a better understanding of the billionaire was the final straw. It was not just time or incompatibility.
Bill Gates’ Affair and Flirty Habits Led to Marital Strain
Soon after the divorce was finalized in May 2021, the most shocking revelation came to light. Bill’s representative, Bridgitt Arnold, even admitted that he had an affair with a Microsoft employee nearly twenty years back. Despite being believed to have “ended amicably,” the relationship led to a legal review at Microsoft in 2019.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Gates later stepped down from the company’s board in 2020 as a result of that internal investigation. The allegations that came after were even more cause for concern. At Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Gates had set up a practice of dating women in the workplace, according to the New York Times.

He once asked one of his juniors out to dinner via email after a presentation and added the creepy note, “If this makes you uncomfortable, pretend it never happened.”
Melinda did not admit in public that she knew about every single event that happened during their marriage. “Those are questions Bill needs to answer,” she said when responding to a 2022 CBS News question regarding the allegations against him. “There was enough there that I realized it just wasn’t healthy, I couldn’t trust what we had.”
Jeffrey Epstein, Nightmares, and a Marriage Melinda Couldn’t Save
When The New York Times reported that Bill Gates met with Jeffrey Epstein from 2011 to 2014, the story took an even darker turn. Gates later admitted to CNN that “it was a huge mistake to spend time with him,” even with his earlier claims that the association was only charitable. The harm was much more personal for Melinda.
On one of those visits, she went with Bill Gates and headed back, traumatized for life.

In an interview with CBS, she talked about Epstein as “evil personified.” She came to realize that her marriage could no longer be spared by the nightmares that followed. Melinda wrote about her endless dreams of the home she shared with her family falling apart in her book The Next Day. She couldn’t bring herself to ignore the metaphor for much longer.
Melinda Gates finally came to terms with her decision, but Bill has since described the divorce as “miserable” and his biggest regret. She said the marriage was “irretrievably broken” when they agreed upon their divorce in August 2021.
