A 2022 bodycam footage uploaded to WHAS11’s YouTube channel captures the extraordinary actions of Nicholas “Nick” Bostic, a 25-year-old pizza delivery man from Indiana, who risked his own life to save a young girl trapped inside a burning home.
The incident took place on July 22, 2022, at approximately 12.30 a.m. in the 2200 block of Union Street in Lafayette, Indiana. Bostic was driving along a street when he spotted a two-story house fully engulfed in flames. With no fire trucks in sight or stopping to call 911, he rushed inside to check whether anyone was trapped.
Inside, Bostic walked through the house filled with thick smoke and found Siana Barrett, 18, who was already evacuating her younger siblings and a family friend while their parents were out on a date. After helping them escape, one of the children told Bostic that six-year-old Kaylani “Baby K” Barrett was still trapped inside.
Bostic, despite the worsening fire, ran back inside and searched through the thick smoke until he heard her crying. Since he was unable to retrace his steps safely and couldn’t find the door, he jumped from a second-story window while cradling Kaylani in his arms.
Police bodycam footage shows Bostic staggering toward officers with the child before collapsing from smoke inhalation and multiple injuries, including burns and lacerations.
While first responders were treating him, Bostic’s first concern was the child he had just rescued. “Is the baby OK? Please tell me the baby’s OK,” he repeatedly asked officers.
Kaylani survived with only minor injuries, while Bostic was hospitalized with smoke inhalation, burns, and injuries to his arm and ankle before later being discharged.
The children’s parents, David and Tiera Barrett, rushed home after learning about the fire. At first, they believed Kaylani was still missing, unaware that she had already been rescued and was receiving medical attention in an ambulance nearby.
Although the family lost nearly everything in the fire, they have repeatedly credited Bostic with saving their lives and have since welcomed him as part of their family. The cause of the fire remained under investigation at the time.
Bostic’s selfless actions resonated with people across the country. A GoFundMe campaign launched by his cousin to cover medical expenses quickly surpassed its original $100,000 goal, eventually raising more than $683,000.
Viewers praised both Bostic and Seionna for their bravery, with one calling it, “Biblical masculinity.”
Another added, “We need more people like this Indiana pizza driver in this world! He’s got a great heart!” A third commented, “He SAVED 5 kids not just 1.”
