In October 2019, Florida Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Pounds pulled over a couple for speeding. However, the routine traffic stop quickly took an unexpected turn.
Instead of writing a ticket, Deputy Pounds realized the woman inside the vehicle was in active labor. Without wasting any time, he stepped in to help and successfully delivered the couple’s baby right there on the side of the road before emergency medical services arrived.
CBS News released the exclusive police dashcam footage that captured the wholesome moment. Deputy Pounds can be seen swinging into action to help the struggling mother.
Florida Deputy Pounds later released a statement and shed light on how the situation unfolded.
“I stopped a vehicle traveling 63 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour Zone as I exited my patrol car to make contact with the driver he was yelling officer help help officer and I ran up there to the driver’s side and he stated that his wife was in labor and about to give birth in the vehicle.”
“He raised her dress a little bit and I could see the crowning of the baby coming out. (I) got on my portable radio, called for backup units and EMS Personnel to respond to my location. Then I ran to my patrol car, grabbed some gloves and a sterile blanket from my patrol vehicle, put it back up to the passenger side of the stopped vehicle where the mother was.”
Because of the Deputy’s prompt decision, the mother could get proper help in time. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
“It was moments later that the baby girl had come out, and I checked to make sure that she was breathing and that she was okay. She squeezed my finger with a nice firm grip, and mom and baby appear to be okay.”
The Deputy lauded the mother for staying calm. “Mom handled it really well and stood by and waited for emergency services to arrive, and after they arrived, the baby was handed over to them and mom was treated by ambulatory services and they were later transported to the hospital,” he revealed.
He said that the incident will stay with him forever.
“This was definitely not your typical traffic stop. In my 26 years as a law enforcement officer, I never encountered a traffic stop where someone was giving birth. It was exciting. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but I was happy to be the one to help these people have their child, and I’m glad everything turned out okay, and I hope the baby grows up to be healthy and happy and live a long, good life.”
Viewers commended the deputy for handling the situation with such professionalism.
“This police officer was calm as a cucumber. He could have been a doctor in an alternate life. Great job,” said one viewer. Another added, “That stop was a blessing in disguise. I don’t think Dad would have made it to the hospital on time.”
A separate commentator added, “Idk why but I’m laughing so hard at how nonchalant the officer was about the situation. “Congratulations, you got a baby girl…”
“When I see officers like this, it restores my hope in humanity. I am literally tearing up with hope,” read another comment.
