A 3-year-old girl in California was bitten by a rattlesnake that was hiding beneath an Amazon package. The parents of the 3-year-old, Addy, Lynn and Manny, described the horrific experience on a GoFundMe page.

Addy ran outside to grab the Amazon package when her mother, Lynn, asked her to get it. The toddler was excited about the gift and grabbed the padded brown envelope. Unfortunately, a rattlesnake was hiding under it.

The snake bit her left hand, which could have been fatal without immediate medical attention. Lynn took Addy to the nearest grocery store parking lot to meet the paramedics and firefighters. After that, they took her to the hospital, where she received the first dose of antivenom.

She was kept under observation at the pediatric ICU before receiving two more antivenom doses. The 3-year-old spent two nights at the hospital. Meanwhile, Manny flew back home when he heard about the accident, as he was away on a work trip. Her father wrote, “I’m reaching out for help after a terrifying experience that turned our world upside down.” 

 

The family’s GoFundMe is to cover medical costs as well as lost pay during the crisis. So far, $16K has been raised, and the goal is $28K. The toddler’s father wrote, “We are facing significant medical bills from Addy’s hospital stay, antivenom treatments, and the pediatric ICU.”

He added, “On top of that, I lost about a week of work to be with Lynn and Addy during this crisis, which has added to our financial strain. We are doing everything we can to support Addy’s healing, but the costs are overwhelming.”

He explained that it’s hard for them to ask for help, but they need support to get through this. They want to support their daughter’s recovery and won’t be able to do so without the community’s help.

 

They asked people to support them during this difficult time. The family is leaning into the community for support. 280 people have donated so far, showing compassion and kindness towards the family.

There has been a rise in snakebites in the region as the Ventura County Fire Department responded to seven different incidents involving rattlesnakes from March to May. In addition, the authorities have warned people about rattlesnake activity in Southern California this year.

They have advised people to take precautions such as wearing long pants and boots while crossing trails. Avoiding stepping on logs and rocks can prevent such accidents. If you reside in an area with a high snake population, make sure you’re aware of your surroundings. In case of a snake bite, remain calm and call 911 as soon as possible to get the right medical attention.
