A California woman in her 30s is in critical condition after two young brothers aged four and seven took their sleeping parents’ car for a fun spin and struck her as she walked her dog, local authorities reported. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the intersection of 35th Avenue and Mangels Avenue. The two boys were driving northbound at high speeds when they lost control and struck the pedestrian.

The children drove a short distance before sideswiping another vehicle and striking a pedestrian, according to the Oakland Police Department. The pedestrian was taken to a local hospital in critical condition, and traffic investigators are working to determine the cause of the crash.

The dog that was with the woman when she was struck by the car ran away during the crash. However, a witness later confirmed that the pet has since been found and is safe.

A white sedan sideswiped a red vehicle before mounting the sidewalk, coming to a rest with heavy front-end damage to its hood. Aerial footage showed a woman walking her dog moments before the collision, with the victim’s shoes left lying near the roadway.

“When the car did get hit, the airbags did deploy, so I did see one of the kids fly to the back because when the airbag deployed, and it hit him so hard and they were so small. I feel like they were in shock, didn’t really expect for the little joy ride in their parents car to end up in such a tragic event,” a passerby who witnessed the accident recalled.

The two boys were not left unharmed by the accident either. According to authorities, the older boy had a broken leg, and the younger child suffered a concussion. The parents are cooperative and are helping authorities with the ongoing investigation. Public backlash quickly centered on the children’s parents. Many users on social media criticized them for failing to supervise the minors.

“Obviously these boys stole keys and car, I’m sure the parents feel badly enough without piling on them let’s all just pray for the woman injured and get these young boys some counseling, at 4 and 6 that’s all you can do nowadays. Although a belt or switch might be way more effective,” read a separate comment from an angry netizen.
