“As Un-American as It Gets”: Trump’s 2028 and 2032 Remarks Sparks Backlash Over Constitutional Term Limits

President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy after he hinted that he could still be in office in 2028 and possibly in 2032. However, as per the U.S. Constitution, no one is allowed a third presidential term.

Trump made the remarks on May 21 while addressing the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's 145th graduating class at Cadet Memorial Field in Connecticut. According to Indy100, the president was discussing the construction timeline for a fleet of icebreaker ships ordered for the U.S. military. Reportedly, the U.S. is working with Finland to learn the process so it can eventually build the ship itself. While talking about this, he shifted to comments about his political future. Trump said during the speech:
"We're making, right now, currently under construction, we have 11. Beautiful."
"And I said, 'Come on, when's the first one coming?' They said, 'In 28'. I said, 'I'm going to be here in 28.'"
While he has often talked about running for a third term, what worried people more was what he said next about a potential fourth term. He said:
"Maybe I'll be here in 32, too. I don't know. Maybe I will. But I'm going to be here in 28. And I'll tell you, I say, that's great, because I'm going to be there."
Trump began his second term in 2025, meaning his presidency would legally end in January 2029. Despite that, the president has repeatedly joked about or hinted at staying in office longer, remarks that have repeatedly drawn criticism with political commentators arguing the remarks undermine constitutional term limits. "Trump tells Coast Guard Cadets that he may illegally still be president in 2032...There is absolutely no excuse for this. This is about as unAmerican as it gets."
Other netizens added: @jmscrimshaw:
"He has no regard for our Constitution. I doubt if he ever read that document."
@rebecca_jivan:
"His sycophants need to stop encouraging this. Tell him to stop. It is against the Constitution, making it illegal. I doubt he could get re-elected anyway without cheating, even if he managed to live that long. Most of us are sick of listening to it. Please make it stop."
The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution explicitly bars any person from being elected as president more than twice. An excerpt from Section 1 of the amendment reads:
"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."
A few users joked about his health. User @cmfia13 wrote:
"That's the dementia taking. Someone please take grandpa back to memory care."
@AngryInVirginia tweeted:
"No offense but Trump won't still be alive in 2032 and possibly not 2028. He's in horrible shape"
