Following a tense call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Donald Trump joked that he is so popular in Israel that he could potentially “run for prime minister.” He said a poll showed him at 99% approval.

Trump’s remarks come amid political tensions in Israel, which have intensified amid efforts to call an early national election and the possibility of Netanyahu being removed from power. On the other hand, the U.S. President’s candid remarks had Americans wishing he would take his joke seriously.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, May 20, ahead of the United States Coast Guard Academy graduation, Donald Trump said, “I’m right now at 99% in Israel. I could run for Prime Minister. So maybe after I do this, I’ll go to Israel, run for prime minister.” The president added, “I had a poll this morning. I’m 99%. So that’s good.”

However, it remains unclear which poll Trump was referring to. While his remarks broke the internet, a section of internet users, particularly American citizens, didn’t miss the chance to roast him. His joke wasn’t taken in stride in his own homeland, where users demanded that he actually leave the office.

A user said on Reddit, “Well, you ruined one country, why not ruin another? Heck, I’ll even pay for your ticket to Israel if it gets you thrown out of this country.” Another user commented, “Maybe you should go do that now. Or maybe, in a sense, you’re already doing that, serving Israel as their leader instead of ours.” A third user excitedly wrote, “GO NOW!!!!!”

In addition, one user said, “No! Go now. We will help you pack. Well, AIPAC and all the Great Replacement Theorist Christian nationalists will help! A netizen added, “Please, leave and go do that. We don’t want you here.” Meanwhile, one user insisted, “Why wait? Just go now. America will thank you.” One more encouraged, “Go Right Now..No One Is Stopping You!”

Furthermore, when the POTUS was asked about planning a potential attack on Iran, he praised Netanyahu and claimed that the Israeli PM would do whatever he would want him to do, per The Times of Israel.

On the other hand, after showing a candid inclination towards Israel, Trump also claimed to run for the presidential election in America in 2028 and 2032. According to Indy100, during a commencement speech at the Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut, Trump talked about 11 icebreaker ships that have been ordered for the U.S. military. He stated that 11 ships currently under construction will be rolled out in 2028.

He shared, “And I said, ‘Come on, when’s the first one coming?’ They said, ‘In 28’. I said, ‘I’m going to be here in 28’.” The president added, “Maybe I’ll be here in 32, too. I don’t know. Maybe I will. But I’m going to be here in 28. And I’ll tell you, I say, that’s great, because I’m going to be there.”

While the reaction on the ground was laughter and cheers, internet users slammed his comments, noting that it is against the constitution to serve a third term.
