Rep. Anna Paulina Luna accused activist group CODEPINK’s co-founder, Medea Benjamin, of attacking her outside the Capitol on Wednesday. She announced on her social media that she would be charging her, but not much later, a video capturing the entire conversation painted an entirely different picture, and the internet couldn’t maintain its calm, pouring mixed reactions to the clip.

Anna Paulina Luna stated on her official X account that after she questioned Secretary Marco Rubio about CODEPINK and their connection with the CCP, “their organization followed me out, berated me, and then their head person here in DC smacked me. I will be filing charges,” she wrote, referring to Benjamin.

Later, TMZ posted the video of the incident that shows during the conversation, at one point Benjamin’s hand slightly brushed Luna’s arm. “Wait, you touched me,” Luna said while calling out Benjamin, who apologized in response while stating that the touch was accidental. The Republican party member then threatened her to “walk away,” as she said, “It doesn’t matter. You just touched me. You’re gonna walk away right now, or else I’m gonna call Capitol Police.”

The internet users had mixed reactions to Luna’s exaggerated response, as one user said, “Totally inappropriate, but if that’s assault then I’m a mau mau fighter pilot.” Another self-proclaimed Trump supporter said, “OMG sorry, she barely touched you. People talk like that. Leave it alone, it’s not like she slugged you. I am a Trump supporter, and this is ridiculous.”

A third user said, “I despise that Code Pink lady, but that is not assault; it’s an older generation thing. We all touched each other’s arms in various ways all the time.” Meanwhile, a section of users argued that boundaries should not be crossed by touch and Luna had every right to tell Benjamin to not touch her.

“An Assault is unwanted, uninvited, unwelcome physical contact. It’s not necessary to draw blood or break a bone for it to be an assault,” read one of the many comments.

Though Benjamin may have walked from the scene at the time, CODEPINK later gave a strong-worded response on their X asserting, “Nobody hit her.” The activist group claimed that instead of responding to the war atrocities she supports, Luna repeatedly lies about activists.

On the other hand, Luna shared another post on her X launching an attack at Benjamin, stating that she was unconcerned by efforts from some Democrats to justify or defend what had taken place. She added, “You don’t get to touch me. You don’t get to hit my arm. You don’t get to come to my office and scream and yell,” further asserting that one can hate her politics, but the line is crossed when one touches her.

Additionally, while speaking with TMZ, Luna stated that she had given her assertions to the police, hoping charges would be filed against her. She acknowledged that it was for the authorities to decide if the charges could be filed against her, yet she believed that the footage was “more than enough evidence” to hold Benjamin responsible and accountable. She also expressed her confidence, believing that Benjamin would be arrested “without a doubt.”
