Veteran actor Gene Hackman is no more! The actor died at 95 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on February 26, 2025. He was found dead alongside his wife of more than 30 years, Betsy Arakawa, 64, and one dog. As Hollywood mourns the Superman actor’s sudden demise, Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, has revealed details about what might have killed the actor.
Gene and the other two deceased are believed to be dead at least a day before they were found. Moreover, Elizabeth spoke to sources and claimed that carbon monoxide poisoning could be the reason behind his untimely death. She also verified that the authorities did not find any concrete evidence to suggest there was any foul play.
As per the outlet TMZ, Santa Fe county cop Adan Mendoza told the outlet that deputies haven’t ruled anything out and are still investigating the matter at the time of writing this news story. Sheriff Mendoza told TMZ that their team performed a welfare check at the property on Wednesday and found the couple’s bodies.
Although Hackman’s daughter Elizabeth did not reveal details about his health before his passing, the actor was last seen in public in 2024 using a cane. Meanwhile, Hackman was married twice, and reportedly, Elizabeth is the second daughter of the three kids he shared with his first wife, Faye Maltese. However, he did not have any kids with Betsy Arakawa.
Hackman’s daughters Elizabeth and Leslie and his granddaughter Annie released an official statement to Parade, adding, “He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us, he was always just Dad and Grandpa. We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”

Several notable celebrities, such as Francis Ford Coppola, who directed Gene in the 1974 film The Conversation, paid him tribute. “The loss of a great artist always causes both mourning and celebration: Gene Hackman, a great actor, inspiring and magnificent in his work and complexity,” Francis wrote alongside a photo of him and Gene on Instagram. “I mourn his loss and celebrate his existence and contribution.”
Academy Award winner Gene Hackman served in the U.S. Marine Corps before pursuing acting. He rose to fame in 1971 with the popular film French Connection, in which he played Detective Popeye Doyle, which earned him his first Oscar for Best Actor. Other notable films in his star-studded career spanning 60 years include Night Moves (1975), A Bridge Too Far (1977), and Hoosiers (1986).

Hackman retired from the movies in 2004 after the film Welcome to Mooseport and redirected to writing and publishing several novels, including Escape from Andersonville (2008) and Pursuit (2013). He was a very private person who preferred to stay away from the spotlight but occasionally gave interviews.
