A welfare check in Texas uncovered a brutal murder in Plano after a man greeted officers with a large blood taint on his clothes.

Plano police arrived at the 4700 block of Charles Place after Eliana Bigoni, 34, failed to show up for a planned breakfast with a friend on August 12.

Jake Bigoni, 37, answered the door with a large stain on his shirt. He claimed the stain was dirt and came from cleaning his house. He initially also told officers that Eliana had visited his home earlier the same day but had since left.

Officers later determined that the stain was blood and found the apartment had “a large amount of blood and blood spatter,” according to the arrest affidavit. Soon, Eliana’s badly beaten body was recovered in the trunk of a white Hyundai parked in the garage of Bigoni’s apartment building.

About 30 minutes before the welfare check, Jake had allegedly confessed to the crime on a call with his mother. He reportedly told her, “I have something to tell you. She’s dead. We got in a fight and she’s dead.” Jake’s mother called police and informed them about his confession.

According to Fox News, the couple’s two children, aged two and five, were also present at the time of the alleged crime and were unharmed. Eliana had visited Jake’s apartment to collect their children when she was killed. Officer Jerry Minton said, “You are talking about two kids who were present when this incident or crime occurred. I can’t speculate as to what they may or may not have seen, but they were present.”

Eliana and Jake were separated and in the process of divorce at the time of the murder. Eliana was identified as a Colombian national.

Jake was charged with first-degree murder and a state jail felony charge of abuse of a corpse without legal authority. He was initially arrested on the corpse abuse charge before officers obtained a murder warrant the next day.

He is being held without bond on the murder charge.

The Collin County Medical Examiners have not yet released Eliana’s cause of death, and how the murder was carried out also remains under investigation.
