A Texas groom shared an emotional mother-son dance at his wedding with the woman who received his late mother’s lungs through organ donation, creating a touching tribute that has resonated with thousands online.
Matthew Firth, who tied the knot with Elisabeth Haskins in May, chose to share the traditional mother-son dance with Carrie Giddens, the woman whose life was saved after receiving his mother Amy Firth’s lungs 13 years ago.
Amy passed away in 2012 after registering as an organ donor through Baylor Scott & White, and her donated lungs gave Carrie a second chance at life after complications from cystic fibrosis left her on life support.
Reflecting on the emotional moment, Matthew said, “It felt like it was Carrie, but at the same time … my mom’s lungs are literally her lungs, so it was as close as I was going to get to that. It felt so special.”
Matthew said that he felt his mother’s presence throughout the dance. Carrie described the experience as “surreal.” “The fact that he wanted to dance with me — not in place of his mom, but to be able to dance with a piece of his mom on his wedding day—it was an honor,” she told Local 10 News.
Over the years, the two families developed a close relationship, often celebrating birthdays, transplant anniversaries, and other milestones together before eventually sharing Matthew’s wedding.
Amy was the daughter of John and Margaret Henderson, who serve as officers with TRIO Central Texas, a nonprofit organization that supports transplant recipients, organ donors, and their families. The couple also serves on the board for Amy’s House Foundation, which provides lodgings and support to transplant patients and their families.
John Henderson said he hopes that Matthew’s dance with Carrie and Amy’s story will encourage more people to register as organ donors.
Craig Giddens, Carrie’s husband, also reflected on how Amy’s selfless decision changed their family’s future, according to She Knows. Carrie said, “Not only was I given the opportunity to continue being a mom to my twin boys—they were only 15 months when I got my transplant, and now, they’re going to high school.” She added that she and her husband later adopted a daughter, something she never imagined would have been possible.
