Yesterday afternoon, an image was spotted by German gaming site Konsolentreff showed what appeared to be a Resistance 3 console bundle (seen above). More interestingly, the bundle was stamped with a “PSN Pass” logo, suggesting that Sony was jumping aboard the online pass train that’s all the rage with publishers nowadays. Today, Sony has confirmed it.
In a statement sent out this morning, Sony stated that the online pass system will be game-specific, and it all starts with Resistance 3 . Like other versions of the online pass, consumers who pick up a used copy of Resistance 3 will have to pay a one-time fee to get access to the game’s multiplayer offerings.
“We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities,” Sony said in the statement. “This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title. This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.”
