A chilling 911 call from retired Marine Collin Turner revealed how his wife, Bree Kuhn, a Navy Chief Petty Officer, shot him dead. However, there was more to the story that explained the motive for the murder and the avoidable circumstances.
Collin and Kuhn used to reside in their Florida home with their children and one from Kuhn’s previous relationship. They had issues in their marriage, ranging from fights to abusive behavior. After serving as a Marine for 14 years, Collin had become a stay-at-home dad. He wanted to take the kids to his parents’ house, but Kuhn was against it.
Bodycam video, posted by the Open Case YouTube channel, showed the wife explaining to the officers about the argument and the assault at the hands of her former Marine husband. According to her, shooting her husband was justified as he was being abusive.
She told the officers that her husband was using the kids against her. She said, “No bruises today because he just pushed me up against the wall and threw me down on the bathroom floor.” The officer asked for proof of violence in the form of physical injuries. She responded with frustration, “So next time I’ll just make sure that he punches me in the face.” The officer assured her he didn’t imply that. However, she did not appreciate that her words were not enough to justify her actions.
The couple was reportedly fighting over custody of the children. In the initial police response, police determined there was no evidence of crime and that the couple shared equal parental and property rights.
When deputies returned at around 5 p.m. after Collin’s second call, they encountered a situation where Bree had locked him out of their home. Kuhn explained to the officer, “So I’m not going to let him in the house if he’s going to come in and start arguing.” During this interaction, the responding officer informed Bree that as a co-owner, Colin could not be legally excluded from their shared residence.
Despite the officer’s warning to remain civil and allow Colin into the house, the situation escalated. Collin called 911 a third time and complained to officers that his wife had locked him in the garage. This time, the operator heard a gunshot, and Collin was injured. He told the operator, “She just shot me. I’m hurting,” before going unresponsive.
Upon arrival, Bree told the officers to arrest her, “No, you should arrest me. I shot my husband.” She was visibly in shock after shooting her husband.
Meanwhile, Collin was found unresponsive in the garage with four gunshot wounds to his chest. She even hid the firearm behind the toaster, took her children, and left for her neighbor’s home.
The detective later interviewed family members and assessed their electronic devices to understand the couple’s dynamics. Kuhn’s brother was reportedly on an active call with her during the incident. He told the officers he heard Kuhn was getting assaulted on the call.
There was screaming, and then gunshots. A few of Collin’s messages to a friend revealed Kuhn destroyed his laptop in a dishwasher because he turned off the WiFi and that he was planning to escape such a volatile environment. In his texts, Collin also acknowledged his own past mistakes.
Bree Kuhn was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and stood trial in Florida‘s Santa Rosa County in September 2024. She was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.
Kuhn had admitted to shooting in self-defense, as she said during the interview, “I told him that I wanted a divorce, so he was just trying to take the kids.” She claimed Collin was about to kill her.
Collin’s mother read an emotional victim impact statement in court during the sentencing: “When I think of the impact the loss of Collin has made on my life. It is difficult to put into words. The grief can wash over at any time. Our daughters have had the shock of unexpectedly losing their brother. And as a mother, their pain is my pain. But the greatest impact has been watching how this loss has impacted Collin’s younger children.”
She has custody of their kids and noted the trauma they had after the incident. Even small fights at home fill them with fear. They worry if their grandparents will leave them despite the repeated assurance.
