A Connecticut man was arrested after he fatally shot a man who was sleeping at his estranged wife’s home.

Joshua Freitag, 33, broke into the house around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, August 18, after seeing the victim’s car parked in the driveway. He shattered the rear sliding glass, got in, and shot 34-year-old Mark Morgan multiple times.

His wife called 911 after she heard glass-shattering noises and gunshot sounds. She allegedly saw Freitag entering the home.

She was sleeping on the couch at that time, and Morgan was sleeping in the upstairs bedroom.

Before the shooting happened, Freitag texted his wife asking her why Morgan was at the house. At first she denied that he was at the house, but later Freitag pointed out Morgan’s car in the driveway.

She told the officers that Freitag did not like that she was friendly with Morgan and got upset after learning he was there. They had gotten into similar fights because of her friendship with Morgan.

Freitag fired multiple shots to murder Morgan while two juvenile children were at the house. According to the press release, “Troopers assigned to Troop C in Tolland” arrived at the residence on South Road in Somers.

The press release further read, “Upon arrival on scene, troopers were met outside of the residence by Joshua Freitag, who was detained without incident.”

Emergency responders administered lifesaving measures to Morgan but pronounced him dead due to the extensive injuries. Freitag complied with the police officer’s commands, facing the road by the front door with his arms raised before kneeling. The police handcuffed him and took him into custody.

According to the civil court documents, Freitag was named in a divorce filing just five days before he shot dead Morgan. The wife told the police they had not been living together, and she had changed the front door passcode. Besides, he did not have keys to the home.

Freitag is now being held in jail and charged with murder, home invasion, and risk of injury to a child. Meanwhile, his attorney argued for a $250,000 bond. He explained the incident was personal, and Freitag poses no threat to the public. The attorney also said that he owns the home and provides financially for the children, so he cannot break into his own home.

On the other hand, Morgan’s mother said while wailing, “He unloaded a gun on my 34-year-old son! That was my son! That was my son.” Freitag’s attorney further argued he has no criminal history and surrendered in peace.

Despite the requests, his bond was set at $1.5 million, and a protective order was issued for the wife and kids living at the residence. According to WFSB, Freitag will appear in court on September 18.
