Police responded to a welfare check call from an apartment complex security guard on April 30, 2022. They discovered a child sleeping on the ground outside the complex. The police officer asked the kids, “Did you walk over here? Did you walk a really long way? Do you know where you live?”
He also made sure he wasn’t hurt or needed medical attention. After further investigation, the officer discovered three kids were outside the home and unattended. A neighbor came out to speak to the officer and provide information about the mother. Later, the mother’s friend, who also lived nearby, talked to the police.
She told them she had asked her to look after the kids. She was also taking care of her own son, so she went back and forth to check up on everyone during the night. Meanwhile, the kids were not supposed to be alone, but the mother’s brother should have been watching them.
The officer asked her, “Do you watch the kids very often?” She responded with a yes and told them, “We’re friends, best friends.” The officers tried to establish a timeline of events, but she had vague answers.
But after some time, the mother came back to her house and was interrogated by the officers, where she gave similar information and added that the friend had probably returned to take a bath. But the friend confessed to one of the officers that she had just a call from the mother after knowing that the police had come to her door.
The kids were unattended from 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. while the mother went clubbing with her boyfriend. They were on their own for two and a half hours, so the police called DCF. Identified as 25-year-old Shila Idleberg, the mother was taken into custody. She was charged with neglect of a child without bodily harm.
The bodycam video has over 1.5 million views on YouTube. Many people called the mother irresponsible. One viewer commented, “Hanging out with the boyfriend is more important than her kids. It’s sickening.” The second one posted, “Her children were found sleeping on the street while she was out clubbing, and she giggles like it’s nothing. Sad, poor babies.”
Several viewers noted they wouldn’t have helped her as a friend, “If my friend calls me and says cover for me, I’ve neglected my children, and the police are at my house. I wouldn’t. And we wouldn’t be friends anymore.” One more chimed in, “She’s crazy for covering up for her friend, ain’t no way I’m risking going to jail.”
Another one posted, “I adopted two dogs 6 years ago. I haven’t been to a club since. I don’t like leaving them alone at night. Imagine that. When do people realize parenting = lifestyle change?” The video highlights how the mother isn’t fit to be a parent, and that puts her kids at risk.
