A confrontation in Northern California escalated into a racial dispute after a white woman armed with a stun gun ordered an African American family to submit to her, authorities confirmed. The incident, captured on video near San Francisco, drew immediate scrutiny from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.
Surveillance footage shows Adana Dean, brandishing the weapon while demanding the California family “stop acting Black.” Witnesses reported the suspect maintained an aggressive stance throughout the encounter before she later asserted to onlookers that she possessed documentation proving she was not racist.
Deputies from the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff responded to the residential neighborhood following emergency calls detailing an armed dispute. Investigators reviewed the video evidence to determine if hate crime enhancements or brandishing charges applied to the case.
According to ABC7, a statement from the County office reads:
“Although Deputies determined that no crime had been committed, a report was taken to document the interaction between the two neighbors, as the original complaint was in reference to a neighbor dispute due to an off-leash dog. The Office of the Sheriff will refer the case to Contra Costa Animal Services.”

“You need to submit to me,” Dean said in the recorded video, holding up the electric device towards the family. Despite enduring the multi-minute rant, the victims, who kept themselves calm throughout, challenged her authority and asked her to get out of their place. She further claimed the family wasn’t acting “normal.”

The whole conflict began over Dice, the Jones family’s two-year-old pitbull. The neighbor, Dean, claimed the dog was running around the neighborhood without a leash, though the Jones family strongly denied this when speaking to the media. When Dean demanded that Garrett keep the dog indoors, Garrett refused, arguing that he had just as much right as anyone else to let his dog be outside.
Later, a video recorded by the California family captured Dean telling them, “You know what? You guys are acting like Black people, and you should act like white people.”
For 12 years, Gerritt Jones and his family enjoyed a peaceful life in their neighborhood, never experiencing any conflict with their across-the-street neighbor, Dean. Reflecting on the sudden turn of events, Gerritt remarked, “Unfortunately, that’s the reality of being Black in America.”
Jones further notes what would happen if the tables were turned. He said, “She had a stun gun and if my sister or any of them got physical with her, the story would’ve been this Black family is assaulting this white lady in the streets.”

Garrett, a decorated Army veteran, wanted to show his family by example that racism has absolutely no place in the world.
“I want my son to grow up and be proud of who he is. I hope that people all over the country learn from this and see that this can’t be tolerated.”

Jones died in October 2025; the 2020 viral video resurgence now carries the weight of posthumous legacy.
