Deborah McVay, a 46-year-old Ohio resident, was fatally shot inside her family home in Holmes County on January 2, 2011. Investigators determined that the shooting had been carried out by her 10-year-old son, Joseph “Joey” McVay, following an argument over a household chore.
The violence was triggered when Deborah asked her son to bring firewood in from outside. What began as a routine chore quickly escalated into an explosive argument. Frustrated, Joey went to his bedroom, retrieved a firearm, and returned to the living room. Despite desperate pleas from his sister, Shauna, not to pull the trigger, Joey shot Deborah in the head.
Immediately after the shooting, Joey ran out of the house to alert neighbors. He confessed to the killing of his mother. The neighbor who took him in called 911. “I have the little boy here down at my house, his mom up there. He shot his mom with a 22,” she informed the operator.

When asked what prompted him to shoot his mother, his answer was simple. “Every day just making me so mad,” he said.
Joey’s grandmother was also present during the interrogation. “I’m Grandma McVay, and Debbie was talking to me just prior to this, and I don’t know. She was sending the DR and saying all this to him, and then I heard so much screaming going on,” she said.
After collecting DNA evidence and taking a written statement, Joey was taken for further questioning. Officers noted that while Joey expressed panic, his primary concern was leaving the house, finding a lawyer, and asking if he could live with his grandmother.
He told investigators he was angry because his mother called him lazy after he was hit in the shoulder by a piece of wood while carrying firewood. He admitted to being mad before, felt bad about shooting her, and agreed no one should die over an argument.
“She calls me lazy. I hate that she calls me lazy cause I’m the only one who brings firewood in other than when my dad was there. I do a lot of things, but no I’m ‘lazy one.’”
Joey’s father, Michael, described the household as volatile, saying Deborah had severe anger issues, was on anxiety medication, frequently yelled at the children, and had been physically aggressive with family members in the past.
Joey’s sister, Shauna, testified that Joey and their mother argued constantly. She also revealed that Joey pointed the gun at her before he set the gun down and panicked.
Police officers further learned that Joey had a history of behavioral issues, including an altercation with a bus driver in 2006 and striking a school administrator with a dustpan in 2007 at age six.
Psychologists confirmed that Joey suffered from anxiety, depression, and a learning disability. The shooting caused him severe psychological distress.
Joey was sentenced to indefinite confinement under the Ohio Department of Youth Services. It was decided that he will be moved to an adult prison until officials decide if he is safe enough to be released on probation.
The case drew significant attention online, with many sympathizing with the little boy and directing criticism at the parents for pushing him to his limits.
One commentator wrote, “Perfect example of parental failure. Also as a side note, it’s not unusual for an abusive parent to select just one of their children to be the subject of their awful parenting. Nor is it unusual for the unabused siblings to not be able to recognize what’s happening around them. Toxic.”
Another added, “The calmness of everyone in the room when the cops first walk in tells so much. As if everyone knew the cause of chaos, the mother and the fights between her and joey was finally over.”
“He saw his parents fighting; his mom verbally and physically abused him. His dad let him have his guns in his room️. Just all around horrible parenting. HORRIBLE. I hope Joey has gotten extensive therapy for his issues,” read a third comment.
