A North Dakota couple have been arrested for concealing their infant’s death and hiding the child’s remains in a tote containing concrete for about three years.

Craig Michael Kerzmann, 49, and Sarah Kerzmann, 45, were charged with one felony count each of failure to report the corpse of a child and disturbing a human burial site, authorities said. Craig also faces an additional felony charge of domestic violence resulting in serious bodily injury.

The crime came to light when officers from the Minot Police Department responded to the couple’s residence in southeast Minot at around 4.18 p.m. on Saturday regarding a domestic violence report.

According to an affidavit, a neighbor called police on August 21 to report that Sarah, who was intoxicated at the time, had told her about a deceased infant in her home’s closet. The neighbor alleged Sarah told her she had given birth to triplets in Wichita Falls, Texas. She added that one of the infants had died at around six months while Craig was taking care of the baby.

The next day, according to Valley News, another neighbor reportedly told police that Sarah allegedly called him saying she had cut Craig with a knife and that they were headed to a hospital. Officers tracked the couple at a motel in Minot, where Craig was taken into custody. The affidavit claims he allegedly told Sarah that if “I’m going down, so are you,” before telling officers about the deceased child in the closet.

Police said in a statement, “Investigators received information that the child died approximately three years ago in another state and that the death was not reported to law enforcement at the time.”

“Investigators were told that the infant’s remains were believed to be located in a tote containing concrete,” officers said, adding detectives soon located “a tote consistent with the description provided” and transported it to the North Dakota State Forensic Examiner’s Office in Bismarck for evaluation.

Officers have not yet disclosed the cause of the child’s death or the circumstances surrounding it. They are currently working with law enforcement partners in Texas, where the infant is believed to have died.

Craig is being held in the Ward County Jail without bond, according to records. He is scheduled to appear before the court on Monday. Meanwhile, police said Sarah is currently receiving medical care and would also be taken to the same jail once cleared by doctors.
