A Nevada man is suing online car ride company Lyft, claiming negligence by its driver that caused him injuries.

The incident took place in August 2024 when the driver allegedly dragged David Morris, of Clark County, for 300 feet while his wedding ring got stuck in the vehicle’s door handle.

Morris filed the lawsuit against the company on Monday, August 10, in District Court and is seeking over $30,000 in damages after the Lyft driver accelerated at high speed, which caused injuries to Morris.

The complaint reads, “Plaintiff’s left hand was stuck in the door handle, caught by his wedding ring. Plaintiff was dragged and slammed against pavement for approximately 300 feet.”

 

The Lyft driver is identified as John Doe in the complaint. Morris has asked for more than $15,000 in compensatory damages and special damages exceeding $15,000, damages for medical care and treatment, attorney fees, and compensation for lost earnings.

In the complaint, the victim has also accused the company of their negligent hiring practices. He claimed the company should be aware if the driver is “incompetent, unfit, and dangerous in his capacity.”

Another Lyft driver allegedly assaulted a mother of five, Diamond Cannady. Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump has sued Lyft for $50 million on her behalf to get her justice. The accused Lyft driver locked the car, removed his pants, and then tried to kiss her. The victim claimed she’s still recovering from the trauma of the incident.

Apart from the lawsuits, the plaintiffs have asked the platform to improve active speed and safety monitoring, consider customer feedback, and conduct better background checks for the drivers. Crump stated they want to prevent incidents like this in the future.


The attorney is also representing the family of a Durham couple who were killed during a Lyft ride in Detroit. The company has several other nationwide lawsuits ranging from accidents causing injuries to inadequate safety measures.

So far, the company has not responded to the news of the lawsuit. According to Lyft, a person with a valid driver’s license and at least 25 years old can apply for the job. They have to pass a screening test that checks the driver’s history and criminal background.

A person who is convicted of violent crimes, s— offenses and acts of terror is prohibited from driving for the platform. In addition, the company may disqualify a person over d– and alcohol use, theft, and fraud convictions within the last seven years.
