Mel Gibson ‘s dad, Hutton Gibson, who is probably most famous for questioning the size of the Holocaust, is reportedly claiming spousal abuse as his reason for divorcing his wife of ten years.

Hutton, 93, filed for divorce from Teddy Joye, 78, last week, according to The New York Daily News , and has claimed that his wife is abusing him by not allowing him to take the medications required to heal him when he is seriously ill.

TMZ reports that Joye believes that her husband’s family, including his son Mel, is prolonging the elder man’s suffering by continuing the medications. She wants to discontinue all drugs, in order to accelerate his death, because she believes that is what her ailing husband wants.

Mel contests the idea, requesting that Joye leaves his father’s house as soon as possible. He reportedly has taken over Hutton’s medicine regiment, assuring that he is getting the care he needs. TMZ reports that Mel Gibson also believes Joye is guilty of elder abuse by not giving Hutton Gibson the medication he needs.

The New York Daily News reports that Hutton cited “irreconcilable differences” in the divorce filing, which he signed himself, although his signature was quite shaky. He reportedly made the decision to divorce his wife himself, after her recent actions, which apparently did not support his request to live longer.

Hutton Gibson fathered 11 children with his first wife, the late Anne Reilly, and now has 50 grandchildren. He did not have any children with Teddy Joye. Aside from being the father of actor Mel Gibson, Hutton is also well-known for questioning the historical accounts that say six million Jews died in the Holocaust, when interviewed by the New York Times in 2003. Joye put her own two cents in as well, according to the New York Daily News, saying:

“There weren’t even that many Jews in all of Europe.”
