Mary Kennedy, the estranged wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., reportedly had committed suicide in her Bedford, New York home yesterday. The Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death was asphyxiation by hanging .
Multiple sources are reporting that Mary Kennedy was found in the barn on her property. She was hanging form a homemade noose and had left a suicide note.
Mary Kennedy, who has battled with drug and alcohol addiction for years reportedly had told people she felt “lost and alone”.
The Daily News said,
“She always seems lost these days, whenever she came into the village,” said a neighbor. “Lost and alone and sort of out of it.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was the son of the late Senator Robert Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Mary Richardson Kennedy filed for divorce in 2010 after 16 years of marriage.
Three days after their divorce was set into motion and the couple had split up, Mary Kennedy was arrested for suspicion of DUI. She plead guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay a $500 dollar fine and the judge revoked her driver’s license for 90 days.
Mary Kennedy’s run ins with the law did not end there. A few months after that incident, she was arrested again , this time for driving under the influence of drugs. She was not forced to enter a plea in the case because a Pleasant Valley Town judge had later thrown out all charges against MAry Kennedy in the case. In the judge’s opinion he noted that while Kennedy was intoxicated on prescription drugs, there wasn’t evidence Kennedy knew that the prescription drugs she had taken would impair her ability to drive.
RFK Jr. and Mary Kennedy have four children together.
Mary Kennedy’s family released a statement after she was found saying,
“We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her,” the family said in a statement issued by attorney Kerry Lawrence. “Our heart goes out to her children who she loved without reservation.”
