New insight is about to be gained into the final months of John F. Kennedy ‘s life. The John F. Kennedy library are set to release 45 hours of phone calls and meetings involving the legendary President. These will be the last tapes released from the archives and the overall running time will total 260 hours. The last secret tapes cover such tense subjects as the Vietman conflict and relations with the Soviet Union. There are also family moments released which show JFK to be as much of a family man as a politician.
On one particularly haunting call, Kennedy comments on what would be his last day:
“Monday? Well that’s a tough day.” “It’s a hell of a day, Mr. President,” a staffer replies.
The fascinating insight to John F. Kennedy’s views and approach continues as he is heard discussing the Bay of Pigs:
“What is it we have to sell them? We hope we have to sell them prosperity, but for the average guy the prosperity is nil. He’s not unprosperous, but he’s not very prosperous… And the people who really are well off hate our guts.”
John F. Kennedy shows the kind of forward-thinking that made him such a legend in his day. In another recording, he is heard expressing concern about the discord between voters and politics.
“We’ve got so mechanical an operation here in Washington that it doesn’t have much identity where these people are concerned.”
The JFK Library started releasing material in 1983 and have so far released 40 recordings.
