Heathers Sequel being planned, at least it’s not a remake

Winona Ryder has confirmed rumors that first surfaced in 2006 and have been doing the rounds ever since: there’s a sequel being worked on to the 1989 cult classic Heathers.

“Whatever you hear, there is a sequel in the works. I swear to God,” Ryder told Us Weekly. “But for some reason the writer Dan Waters and director Michael Lehman don’t want to talk about it. I’ve been wanting to do a sequel forever. There is a story, and Christian [Slater] has agreed to come back as a kind of Obi-Wan character.”

Heathers, a black comedy starring Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty portrayed four girls in a trend-setting clique at a fictional high school in Ohio. The girls—three of whom are named Heather—rule the school through intimidation, contempt, and sex appeal, until Ryder and Slater use murder as a tool to change things. The movie was a box office failure, but went on to gain cult status, and rightly so: it was one of the best teen movies to come out of the 80s.

On the bright side, at least they’re not remaking it.
