Police arrested a Florida couple after their three-year-old son’s death, while two other kids were found in inhumane conditions. According to Fox 32, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office was called to their home on July 12,  2020, when their son became unresponsive. It wasn’t a sudden death, but was a result of long-term child abuse from the parents.

The Florida mother of the three-year-old, Ashley Ferguson, had called 911 for help. The child was pronounced dead, and the investigation started. The investigators focused on the conditions that led to the child’s death and left his other two siblings temporarily disabled. Forensic evaluations revealed the children did not even have access to basic things.

As parents, Ashley and Mathew failed to provide them with food and medical care. Later, it was revealed that the children were left unattended for long periods, malnourished, and without medical care. They had diaper rash, bedsores, matted hair, and were unable to walk or speak.

The parents were only feeding their kids milk, which is not enough for their growth and development. When one of the children could no longer walk, they did not seek medical care. Ashley lied to Matthew, who is the father of the kids, about the appointments.

According to the autopsy of the three-year-old, his death was due to chronic child neglect and was preventable. The other two kids needed oral surgery and had to relearn how to eat and walk. They were placed with a family member as they needed immediate attention.

Ashley was arrested on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and two counts of child neglect. She was the primary caretaker of the kids’ needs and was thus held responsible for the homicide due to chronic child neglect. Mathey was charged with three counts of child neglect.

The father was arrested at his workplace, while the mother was arrested at the house. According to the bodycam video of the arrests, the father was surprised, but there was no major struggle during the arrest.

When the mother was arrested, she told the officer, “I didn’t do anything to my son.” Both parents were taken into custody. On the other hand, their other two kids had a long way to recover and remain under state protection for rehabilitation and care.
