A Margate, Florida, man is facing attempted murder and child abuse charges after he allegedly attacked his sister with a machete on Monday. The arrest report stated that the latter’s 1-year-old daughter was sleeping nearby, according to the New York Post. 

Ruben Altidore, 36, repeatedly slashed at his sister in her bedroom. The incident left her with a 10-inch wound on her right thigh e and a four-inch wound on the back of her right hand, according to reports. She nearly lost several fingers in the attack as well.


Altidore shouted in frustration during the assault, asking why his sister was not yet dead, according to the arrest report. The report did not point to why Altidore might have assaulted his sister.

The woman’s daughter was asleep in the home when the attack began. The child was not physically injured but was later found covered in her mother’s blood, investigators said.

The victim, who has not been publicly identified, fled the home and sought help from a neighbor. Bodycam footage obtained by WPLG captured her screaming that her brother was trying to kill her as officers arrived at the scene.

Neighbor Luis Pereira told WPLG the woman ran into the middle of the street before coming to his front door asking for help. Investigators arrived shortly after and began securing the home.

“She ran to the middle of the street and then ran to my front door where she was asking for help. Apparently she was sleeping when this all happened. I was just baffled by it. How can you do that?”

Officers found blood spatter both outside the residence and throughout its interior, according to the report. A knife sheath was recovered in the kitchen, and the machete itself, which had red smudges on the blade, was found underneath a bed.

The attack occurred in Margate, a city about 40 miles north of Miami. Investigators have not established a motive.

Altidore was arrested later Monday and appeared in court Tuesday, where he was formally charged with attempted felony murder, aggravated child abuse, and a violation of probation. He appeared in beige jail overalls and remained handcuffed throughout the brief hearing.

If convicted on the most serious charge, Altidore could face up to life in prison. The Ruben Altidore case remains under investigation.
