A mother of two was abducted and murdered in her front yard on Monday by an off-duty Pinellas County sheriff’s deputy in Florida. He then subsequently turned the gun on himself in what officials described as a “murder/suicide.”
According to law enforcement, the victim had just arrived home from a beach trip with her two children, ages 9 and 12, when they encountered 47-year-old Deputy Troy Savetz waiting for them outside their Hudson residence.
Details of the murder-suicide were released during a joint press conference Monday night hosted by Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco and Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
According to them, when the Florida mother saw the deputy’s unsettling demeanour, she sent her kids inside and asked them to call 911.
“The victim had taken her two young juvenile children to the beach today. Around 5: 30 they came home. When they were pulling up in her house, they saw the victim’s ex-boyfriend, who was identified as Troy Savitz. He was standing in their yard in Hudson, Troy Savitz, and the victim started arguing. Supposedly, Troy wants his TV back or some dispute over some of his materials,” Nocco said during the conference.
“The victim tries to call 911. At some point, Troy takes the phone out of her hand so she is unable to call 911. The victim then tells her children to go inside to call 911, which they do.”
The 12-year-old child contacted 911, identifying Savetz to dispatchers. Nocco commended the children’s remarkable composure and bravery. He noted that the precise information provided allowed deputies to respond swiftly.
When Pasco County deputies arrived at the residence, they cleared the home and secured the Florida children. The victim’s phone and vehicle remained at the scene, but she and Savetz were gone.

“They found her phone. The door was open, but at that point they realized that she’s no longer there. And then we also get some information. This is always still preliminary, but we find out that they’re in a rental vehicle. We find out that Troy had rented this vehicle. So at this point we notify FHP. The Penelope Sheriff’s Office has already been notified. And Hernando Sheriff’s Office, our canine, and our drones, and aviation are out there.”
Using aviation, drones, K-9 units, and multi-agency coordination with the Florida Highway Patrol and neighboring sheriff’s offices, law enforcement tracked a rental vehicle driven by Deputy Savetz to Platinum Drive.
“A pin comes back to an area of Platinum Drive where one of our deputies sees the vehicle. They see the vehicle and at that point we fly a drone. We’re able to identify those two bodies in the car. Our teams approach safely because we’re not sure we know the suspect’s arm, but we’re not sure exactly if he’s still alive or not.”
“But then we identify the he and the victim are deceased…Information comes out later that there was a person that had seen him, the suspect driving down the street. They actually gave each other a thumbs up at some point. And so and then shortly after that where the suspect took his own life.”
Florida authorities believe Savetz kidnapped the victim from her home before taking her life and turning the gun on himself.
“I mean, honestly, he put those kids in harm’s way. Like the sheriff said, I mean, there’s just no reason why he did what he did. Like any of us would agree. I mean, the moment this individual committed a crime he was no longer a law enforcement officer. He was a criminal and that’s what he did. And by even going out there at that point, to you know, with a gun confronting this lady in front of her children, they just were at the beach. I mean they literally went from the best day of their lives, probably, to the worst day of their lives.”
Gualtieri strongly condemned the deputy’s action and said, “There is no reason to have a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Whatever was going on between him and her, as Sheriff Naco mentioned, is domestic violence. Obviously some mental health issues with him and he killed her and killed himself. It’s just a very very horrific to say the least situation and the fact that he made that kind of a decision to leave two kids at 12 and 9 years old without a mom for the rest of their life is just awful.”
