Singer (and “Celebrity Apprentice” contestant) Cyndi Lauper did her part to support World AIDS Day by combining forces with M.A.C. cosmetics and putting together “goodie bagss” for teens at the LGBT Youth Center in New York’s West Village.
World AIDS Day is in honor of those who have lost their lives as well as those who are struggling with the disease.
“A lot of people are feeling bad about themselves, and when you’re a teenager you’re self destructive,” Lauper explained to People Mag. “But what seems terrible now won’t be terrible 10 years down the line. It’s not as bleak as it looks. You’ll get through it. You are precious. Protect yourself.”
Lauper said she believes spreading AIDS awareness is essential and urges parents to encourages their daughters to use the lipstick from MAC’s Viva Glam collection – a collection she has long worked with – as a symbol of protection.
“We have to communicate with our kids,” she said, according to PEOPLE. “Give your girls lipstick, and remind them that every time they put their M.A.C Viva Glam lipstick on and go out, to protect themselves.”
Besides Lauper, other celebrities who have supported the M.A.C. AIDS Fund include Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin. The fund has raised $224 million in their fight against HIV/AIDS.
